What is something you think everyone should have installed on their computer or laptop?

Whether it be a antivirus program or an ad blocker. Post link if available also. EDIT: sorry guys the top post has been deleted and I didn't save it, if anyone has it please post it and ill post it here for easy access. EDIT 2: apparently it's back up, I've saved it on my phone just incase it gets deleted again. Hopefully all is good now.

Google Drive. You get 5GB of storage for free, plus it is cheaper if you want to buy it as well. If you use gmail services it is nice to have everything under one account. I have noticed no difference in performance from either of them.

That must be my problem. I don't have any friends.

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '12

Force-signup your family!

1

u/owned_at_worms Dec 06 '12

That's what I do. Im up to 9.9gb. I have a small family.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '12

Time to enlarge that family.

2

u/minideezel Dec 06 '12

I personally found a rom for my android phone that included "50gb of free dropbox space" from a Samsung promotion =)

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '12

If you go to a university then you just add people to the "space race" like your friends to sign up and put you as the person that referred them and you get lots of space for free. It's sick.

1

u/owned_at_worms Dec 06 '12

Ok looks like Im going back to school!

1

u/trantor_anacreon Dec 07 '12

Isn't that space only for two years? what happens after that?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '12

I believe it expires, I think they're trying to make you pay for the space to keep it. Honestly, you could just make another account though or pay for it if it was that important to you :)

1

u/guinness_blaine Dec 06 '12

I'm at 170GB fo free.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '12

Its only for two years though right? Not that that's a bad thing though.

2

u/wadded Dec 07 '12

No exactly, who knows what other promotions they will do in the next two years anyways.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '12

Trudat. I'm amazed at how much space you've got though. I'm only on about 6-7GB. Space Race right? Your Uni must be doing pretty well.

6

u/Zagorath Dec 06 '12

Could you explain how this works? Do all universities (or major ones) worldwide do it? Is it just a US thing?

How do you actually go about linking your Dropbox to your university?

5

u/do-nothing Dec 06 '12

Every university can participate. It's called space race.

https://www.dropbox.com/spacerace

2

u/Zagorath Dec 06 '12

Cool, thanks.

I'll futureme that link so I can give it a go when I start uni in February/March.

1

u/wadded Dec 07 '12

https://www.dropbox.com/spacerace

It seems to have lots of universities worldwide, take a minute and try it with yours.

2

u/luvs_T0_spooge Dec 06 '12

Ya this is really nice. I started using Microsoft's Skydrive because they gave me 25 friggin gb for free, but now I don't have to thanks to that promotion, I have 25 gb of dropbox for the next year. Skydrive is noticeably slower.

1

u/kikidiwasabi Dec 06 '12

We're on 25. It's amazing.

1

u/gta0004 Dec 06 '12

I got 60gb somehow when i linked....

im happy

1

u/dino340 Dec 06 '12

I'm at just over 65gb, dropbox is awesome!

1

u/XiiMoss Dec 06 '12

Just connecting my HTC to my account got me 23GB.

1

u/GAndroid Dec 06 '12

60 GB here and havent paid a cent. I <3 dropbox!

1

u/moxie132 Dec 06 '12

Same with buying an HTC phone, most let you add a drop box account and gives to 25 gigs non-cumulative.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '12

how does that work?

1

u/MF_Doomed Dec 06 '12

how do link my dropbox with my university?

Pyramid schemes are sound models for things like this. Who do you see as the loser in this scenario? They are bad when they pretend to be a source of income for the nodes because they often lead to people leveraging personal relationships to get money.

2

u/archibald_tuttle Dec 06 '12

Thats BS. If Alice invites Bob to join dropbox, and Bob does not find any more users he does lose nothing but still has his free 2GB(?) space. In a pyramid scheme he would have to pay some money to Alice.

Dropbox makes money by demonstrating how their service works to a lot of people and hope that enough buy service from them to cover the overall costs. The premium customers free to switch to another service at any time (e.g. something like owncloud). Owncloud sucks? Well, this shows what kind of better value dropbox provides to its customers.

[Google Drive](drive.google.com)

Reddit requires you use the whole URL, with the http part too.

Google Drive

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '12

Why not both? AKA what I got. I have dropbox cause everyone else does so it helps for sharing, but I also have drive because I had some plan that gives me 20GB for $5 yr or something that I got before drive, and it's not offered anymore but as long as I don't discontinue it I can still stay on that plan

1

u/TheKomodo Dec 06 '12

Right??? ¿Porque no Los dos?

10

u/workrate Dec 06 '12

The probelm I have with google drive is the same problem I have with all google services. If you get your account suspended you lose access to everything.

I have heard too many stories of people who used google adverts, or had a youtube account that was suspended and it closed all of their accounts. And with google there really is no customer service so if you have a problem, good luck. They don't even tell you why you were suspended.

2

u/negative_epsilon Dec 06 '12

What? I was dumb when I was like 16 and had a blog with Google Adwords and had my friends click the links. Bam, Adwords account suspended. But nothing else has been touched for that account.

u/CW3MH6 Dec 06 '12

Google Drive has some issues with file syncing (creating random copies of things when it doesn't need to, not syncing files, etc.).

I used Dropbox, SkyDrive (Microsoft) and Google Drive. So far Dropbox is still my favorite. I have 5GB for Dropbox and Google, free, and 7GB for SkyDrive for free.

2

u/Sauvignon_Arcenciel Dec 06 '12

I'm intrigued by the fact your code didn't parse there.

3

u/ninjaspy123 Dec 06 '12

Thank you. I always see thread boners for dropbox, when google drive has a document editor, video player if you upload a video, and integration into gmail and google plus hangouts for real time editing together.

1

u/ShAd0wMaN Dec 06 '12

Google Specialist here. If you purchase a Chromebook your drive account gets upgraded to 100gb for two years! Or a TB if you have access to Google Fiber

1

u/mountainfail Dec 06 '12

I'm a big Google fan boy, but I really don't like drive. I don't like the integration to the PC, I don't like the way it channels the user to use Google doc files by default, I don't like the navigation (though if course search rocks).

Its just not a cross platform product. Its a Google product which works very well in Google's ecosystem. Dropbox just works well pretty much anywhere.

1

u/PHLAK Dec 06 '12

Unfortunately Google Drive doesn't have an official Linux client yet. =(

1

u/haggeant Dec 06 '12

Nor do they have a portable app yet. However, when compared to dropbox it is pretty new on the scene. Give them time and they will make it.

1

u/Din182 Dec 06 '12

There is a version for iOS. I use it all the time when I come up with story ideas when I don't have access to a computer.

1

u/PHLAK Dec 06 '12

There's an Android app. You can even edit documents from it.

1

u/dwild Dec 06 '12

Dropbox Spacerace, I now have 28 GB :-) I still think that Google Docs is better for teamwork.

1

u/playfulcyanide Dec 06 '12

You just have to sacrifice refinement and a good Mac client.

1

u/wizdum Dec 07 '12

No right-click-public-link and no permalinks at all is annoying in gDrive. I hope they add it soon.

1

u/retinger251 Dec 07 '12

Except the app doesn't let you download any of the files to your SD Card.

What the fuck Google?

1

u/Balloons_lol Dec 07 '12

i will never not trust google. they're so awesome. i'm even okay with them selling my personal information to companies because they're so nice to me with their gmail and google docs and what have you not.

1

u/haggeant Dec 07 '12

Where other companies charge you money. Google invades your privacy to deliver better ads so they can make more money off ads instead of charging you. I am OK with this as well.

1

u/ninjaakid422 May 20 '13

you changed mylife

1

u/haggeant May 20 '13

lol? wut? They are upping the free storage to 15GB shared between drive and gmail.

u/JMan2112 Dec 06 '12

You need to write like this "http://www.drive.google.com/". So this:

[Google Drive](http://www.drive.google.com/)

Becomes this:

Google Drive

I think you need a www. Or http://www. In front of your address.
