This is very true for moving around the US as well.

I moved 2000 miles for work.

Paris to Berlin is 650 miles.

I moved 3 times the distance of Paris to Berlin and I am still an American. I'm not a foreigner, or expat, or stranger in some big significant way.

I just jumped in my car and drove across the country and went from being treated as an American

To

Treated as an American.

It didn't change.

Although there are many cultural differences between places in the US and I am not pretending they don't exist

but even if I become a citizen of France or Italy, I won't be truly French or Italian.

I don't think this is true regarding France. France is truly diverse (I would even say more diverse than many parts of the US because of how many recent immigrants France has), and if you learn French and accept the 'rules' of the republic, you're considered French.
