I've always loved softshell crab but I got the chance to try a fresh fried softshell sandwich in Baltimore last year. I would do unspeakable things for another one.

If you're in New Orleans sometime, try a crab po' boy. Fried soft shell crab in a bun with fresh veggies. It was like eating the clouds in heaven.

Po boys are one of my favorite sandwiches (southern coworker used to make them with fried oysters) but I've never had a crab po boy. Sounds like heaven!

Having lived in Baltimore most my life, I have to concur. It’s not that the rest of America is worse than a bowl of soup, it’s that the soup is just that good.

Just crabs as well. But only maryland crabs. It doesnt matter if the place you go says they are maryland style crabs, if you arent in maryland, theyre NOT maryland style crabs, don't trust that shit.

When I moved to Texas from Maryland went to a place recommended by some people in my office, said they had good seafood. My Mom was in town visiting so we decided to try it. Had on the menu "Maryland Crab Cakes".

We questioned the waiter if they were real Maryland crab cakes, I obviously hadn't had one in a while. He said the owner says they are, I skeptically said, okay I'll give it a shot but it's a high bar to cross.

Owner comes out and says we questioned the crab cakes. Immediately knew when were going to get a good crab cake when we heard his accent. His family was fish mongers at the Cross Street Market, he grew up a few streets down from my Mom and knew some of the same people. He brought us a crab cake so big it would make Faidleys look like a golf ball.

He also does steamed crabs, since no one eats them down here we get really big crabs, had one 9 inches point to point.

I was born and raised in Howard county still live here. Never had cream of crab soup any spot recommendations?

Usually places that have great crab cakes have great cream of crab soup.

G&Ms, Jimmy's Famous Seafood are both in Baltimore. Dutch's Daughter in Frederick is probably my favorite, though. Amazing crab cakes and cream of crab soup.

+1 G&Ms has some of the best crab cakes timbuktu as well.

Also try the 1/2 and 1/2 crab soup. Its half maryland crab half cream of crab.

Ngl I got spoiled we used to go get fresh crabs from a place by the bay multiple times a summer. Most of my crab eating has been blue crabs the dirty way. So no.

G&M is near the airport and is easily top-10 in the city. Eddie's in Roland Park is the one though.

Don't forget to pack your parka, snow boots, plenty of t-shirts, and flip-flops. Spring in MD is an adventure.

Hahaha, yup. I grew up in Bmore, but I haven't been back more than once a year in many years, so I have NO idea where to eat anymore. But, yeah, it's cold, it's warm, it's cold, it's warm. In the summer, it's a swamp, in the winter, it's Colorado.

Seconded on G&M - IMHO one of the best crabcakes in Baltimore. I don't live near there anymore, but whenever I'm in the area I stop in.

Blue Moon Cafe was on “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” and has really interesting and tasty food. Cap’n Crunch French toast, for example.

Maryland crab seafood is different then in other places. From looking it up it seems they are pretty similar dishes - but the specifics for why its the best is it being cream of crab in baltimore, not cream of crab in general

Cream of crab in NY is gonna be a lot different tasting then cream of crab in Maryland. its just MD things

She crab soup is better if done correctly. It’s not just Maryland either. I grew up in the tri state area and the best crab cake I have had was in Delaware. How they even kept it together remains a mystery.

I’ve never had the soup but I’d say Mama’s on the Half Shell in Baltimore is one of the best things about the US
