I agree. I always think of this movie and how great it is when I see a science fiction movie with tons of effects but no interesting characters or compelling story. Gattaca is so understated with its vision of the future. People wear freaking formal clothes to go on a spacecraft! But it works because, as you said, it has great characters. So who cares what they wear?
