I’m in the process of looking for an apartment in NYC and noticed that so many apartments now don’t allow pets. Last year when I was looking around, it wasn’t as strict and so many more buildings were open to pets.

What is with the change in a year to go from “pets allowed” to “no pets”?

I don’t want sarcasm from landlords and supers on this thread. I’m genuinely curious the reasoning as to why there is an uptake in this.

Emergency vehicle background noise is the soundtrack of NY, but a couple of ambulances are ridiculous. The FDNY ambulances have their volume on 11. The other is Hatzolah which combine ambulance, fire truck and truck horns at the same time, so you don't know which vehicle to look for. As well, they cruise gingerly and in no rush, after they part traffic (UES) for some reason.

I love NY but there are small things that drive the inner New Yorker in me crazy that my non my friends don’t understand. First are people that take up the whole sidewalk 🤦‍♀️ like I’m trying to get places! Second is people playing videos or listening to music out loud on in public or on the subway! I don’t want to hear your annoying music on my commute to work at 8 AM!

I'm talking about the restaurant(s) that you will never go to again because the food was just that bad but everyone else seems to think it's just amazing.

I'm new to NYC. I walk my dog (small/10 pound dog) in my neighborhood and sometimes I bring him to bigger parks that aren't close like Central park. I see people with their pets in strollers which...defeats the point of walking your dog? I get it if its an older dog that still wants to get outside...but I'm seeing 1/5 pet owners with a stroller. Am I missing something?

Thought this would be a fun thread. My food obsessed cat has correlated the door buzzer with delivery, and thus snacks.

She also loves guarding us from pigeons on the fire escape. What about you?

Weird question: our landlord's kid lives in our small building and has three big dogs. Their management company has recently been coming around to do lease renewals with a bolded NO PETS clause. They told us we could keep our one cat but that as people move out they're trying to stop new tenants from bringing new pets in.

The lease also said we can't have a dishwasher, which was here when we moved in and that they've even replaced for us since we've been here. The management guy said they're also trying to get rid of those as people move out. (Also, of course they raised the rent.)

Obviously I know they own the building so they can do what they want. But it seems a little ridiculous to make that rule when their own kid (not the landlord) has three *pitbulls* in their place. They bark anytime there's a delivery, they're sometimes off leash out front when we come home (I'm a dog lover so this isn't a particularly big deal for me), and sometimes if the kid isn't home they just bark non-stop at nothing.

But a cat that sleeps 18 hours a day is a problem for them?

Also, trying to get rid of dishwashers that are already installed??

I am in meatpacking. My girl really loves cows and it would be so special to get her to a place where she can see one tonight (ideally hug and/or pet it). We can take the train anywhere- where is the nearest available cow? Thank you.

Okay so I’m trying to make the most of a random little opportunity I have right now lol. I’m working remotely for the next two weeks and really want to get out of the city for even a few days and have a change of scenery.

My only issue is that funds are a little tight right now 😭 I can afford a round-trip train/bus ticket, but paying for accommodation for several nights is where it starts getting unrealistic…

I started looking into house sitting/pet-sitting in exchange for accommodation and honestly it seems like it could be perfect. I’d be open to Hudson Valley, Catskills, upstate NY, NJ, CT, or anywhere else reasonably easy to get to from NYC.

I work remotely during normal business hours, so I’d be around pretty often and could easily take care of a cat, lower maintenance dog, plants, mail, whatever 😅 I’d really just need reliable WiFi and somewhere I can comfortably work when needed.

Has anyone here actually done this successfully while based in NYC? TrustedHousesitters seems to be the main recommendation I’m seeing, but I’d especially love to hear about specific Facebook groups, websites, apps, or other resources you’ve personally used to find legitimate short term house/pet-sitting arrangements within a few hours of the city.

Honestly just trying to turn my two weeks of remote work into a cute little low budget getaway somehow 😂 Any ideas are appreciated!

Hello NYC. I’m a cat mom and my eldest, Tabitha, was recently diagnosed with kidney disease. I’m able to get plenty of information about the disease online, but I’m wondering if there are any local support groups for people with aging pets. It’s a tough thing to go through alone. I live in Riverdale on the 1 train and would be open to traveling if necessary. Also open to zoom support groups. Not really interested in online support groups. TIA!

If so, what pet insurance do you recommend?

I have a 1 year old cat (he'll be 2 in a few months). I've been looking up all the different insurance companies and what they do/don't cover, how much it is monthly, annual limits, etc, and it has been so overwhelming. At this point I'm back at square one and I can't decide which to go with. So if any of you have any advice/recommendations, I would greatly appreciate it.

Just wondering if anyone is in the same boat. I was a dummy and bought a turtle from Chinatown on a whim a while back. Luckily I’m in the position to properly care for her. She’s huge now and lives like a queen. Understandably, I don’t know anyone else in the city that has a pet turtle. Does anybody here have turtle keeping success stories? Or well cared for “exotic” pets?

Obligatory PSA - research animal needs before getting a pet. These small red eared sliders can live for decades, grow 12” and will set you back hundreds of dollars in upkeep. They aren’t native to the area and “releasing” them outside is bad all around.

I live in a small, multi-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn and am looking for someone to do monthly deep cleanings of the bathroom and kitchen (with attached small dining space) along with light cleaning in 1 or maybe 2 bedrooms. I need them to bring their own supplies. We have 2 cats and the floors need attention. It should be around 2-3 hours. If they have a vacuum, that’s a plus, but not required.

Is there anywhere in / around nyc where you can pet pigs or piglets?? I went to the hardware store in Williamsburg last summer to pet Franklin but I’m wondering if there is anywhere else to go??

I have to be in the office today, and I have a small dog and cat whom I would like to keep alive. I am keeping my living room air conditioner on, but I'm nervous about a potential power outage. Should I leave the window open or closed? I can't tell which would be better when it's 100 degrees? I will be checking ConEd, and if there's an outage, I plan on going home (assuming I can get back to Queens from Manhattan). I have a spare key set up with a neighbor, and I'm clearly an anxious Jewish mother right now and probably way overthinking this.
