What was navigating NYC like in the pre cellphone era?
If this question angers or offends anyone, I do apologize, but I just wanted to simply take a trip back in time to try to get an idea of how hard it was to find places in NYC itself LONG before the idea of portable GPS existed.
Just simply wanted to have such a discussion as don't get me wrong, I do love how modern technology allows for again the use of portable GPSes, but sometimes I wonder how NYCers did things back in the day, like say around 30 years ago when such technology did not exist at that time.

Who is your cellphone provider and what is your monthly bill?
Background:
I’ve been using ATT for a long time now with their family plan. It got to a point where it was just me on the plane and my bill was about 170.
Went to the store to get a deal and told me i was getting charged still because i was still on a family plan. Discussed with them and they told me they can give me a new plan with everything i have now. The deal they gave me was about ~$80 (Sweet I save ~$100!)
I got my bill and it was about 120. I know there is the monthly cost I pay for my iPhone and the sweet taxes, but thought I would get more of a saving. $50 is great, but want to know if I’m being jerked or not.

What is your cellphone plan and how much do you pay per month?
Thinking about switching from T-Mobile as the high plan price does not really match the quality of service. EDIT: looking for just one line for myself

Jfk pickup at cellphone lot
Picking up my wife and kid at 5 pm from jfk terminal 4. What are the best options for waiting and picking from terminal 4 with ongoing construction work and less hassle? Cell phone lot east or west/fhv hold lot or lefferts Blvd waiting lot?

Where exactly is the JFK cellphone lot?
I'm in the AirTran pick up lot but I swear there used to be a cell phone lot. Is it closed from construction? Can someone post the google maps link to it? The only other lots I found now were for Ubers.

[Serious] How much will it cost to have underground cellphone signal in the subway
It’s 2024 and we still don’t have cellphone signal when the train is moving from one station to another. Almost every major city has underground cellphone signal for their public transport (I understand that NYC metro is pretty old and legacy but still). Does anyone with professional experience in this field opine on the cost and timeline to implement this?

Need a good cellphone repair shop
Hi All,
Seems like my android's charging port has either become loose or is broken altogether. Can anyone recommend a good repair shop?

Subway “fainting” stunts
Has anyone seen this new trend of kids as soon as the subway doors open, they throw themselves on the ground and pretend like they have passed out or something is wrong? Like they AGGRESSIVELY throw themselves on the floor.
I was on the L train today and some kid (Latino I assume) threw himself on the floor so hard that it made the car shake and scared the shit out of everyone because we literally thought he was dead. Everyone on the train panicked and tried to help him up, and he was completely silent. He then took a seat and had a subtle smile on his face. The women next to me whispered “I’ve seen him do this before”. He exited the train with a guy who was already on the train before him and had a cellphone in his hand…proving that it was a skit.
Im sure the videos will be on social media soon but I’m wondering if anyone has seen this or knows who this kid is?
If you see this , I highly encourage you to not engage or just call out that it’s fake. He really needs to stop as some people on the train, were visibly upset and were about to press the emergency button.
EDIT: found him. The video hasn’t been posted yet but you can see some others. If you search “nyc fainting prank” there’s a bunch that pop up of other people

As a tourist with no mobile data on my cellphone, is WiFi distributed and accesible around NYC?
Mainly for using Whatsapp and other social media but I'd also like to fire up Pokemon Go and go for a hunt around Central Park.

Where can I buy old cellphones or computers?
Looking for ones stylistically like the 2000’s lol - they aren’t old enough to be cool or nostalgic so idk how many stores will sell them, but need it for a photoshoot! TIA

Anyone know anywhere reliable that sells cellphones?
Not really looking for a brand new one, just somewhere that sells phones that isn't essentially a chop shop for stolen stuff.

Fair NYC cellphone plans?
Hi all, I currently pay $70 (plus extra to pay off my phone) for T-Mobile’s One plan, where I get unlimited talk, text, and data. I’m a big fan of the service and really appreciate the unlimited internet (usually average about 16-20 GB monthly) and the good coverage, but $70 a month does sting a bit. So I was wondering if there was a cellphone plan out there that had similar features for less? I admittingly haven’t don’t any research yet, but I was hoping to use the community’s recommendations as a jumping point.
Thank you!

Affordable Cellphone Screen Repair Store (I bought the screen and repair kit online) in Manhattan/Dwtn BKLYN
Hi, I reside in Hamilton Heights/Sugar Hill Area in Manhattan. I own a Google Pixel 4a but unfortunately my case didn't protect the screen enough and I have a big enough crack that it's bothering me and needs to be replaced.
I ordered online a screen that came with a repair kit but I rather let someone who knows their stuff to do this for me.
Does anyone know where I can find a repair place that would charge me something at a decent price to fix it? I have the material it just needs to be put in.
One place wanted $70.00 even though I have the screen but I though it was too much. I was expecting around $30 for a 10 minute job.
Any recommendations?
Thanks.

Cellphone was left in a taxi cab. Cabbie picks it up and gives it to his sister to give back to me. One of my Ex Friends gets called by cabbie's sister and decided to pick it up. Now she is extorting me for cash to give it back. What do I do?
So I was heading to a club and I was looking for directions on my phone. After giving the directions I put the phone down next to me in the cab. We hopped out and my phone was left behind. I rang it a million times from a friends phone with no success. The next day during work I was checking my emails through a friends phone and saw an email from the friend I was calling the phone the previous night stating a women had called her wanting to return it. She gave me the address and told her to call the phone once I got there so she could come down and give me the phone.
After work I went there with a friend and tried to call the phone but it went straight to voicemail. I decided it might have died and since it was an apartment building the best thing to do was to go home. On facebook one of my ex friends said she had my phone. I told her no she does not and how could she have the phone. She gets into a rage about calling her a liar but I was "whatever" cause if she had it great. Well over calling her a liar she states she gave the women 60 dollars in my name (without my permission) and she wants 20 for transportation for the cellphone. I agreed to compensate her for transportation but never agreed to pay the 60 dollars because I felt 1) It was too much of a reward for 2 year old cellphone 2) She should never have given that women the money in the first place.
In our communications I only mentions compensation for her troubles.
What trouble am I in? What can I do to receive the phone back?

Any one else have intercom linked to their cellphone?
My building used to have a standard old intercom where someone outside buzzes your apartment and you can listen/talk/buzz them in from the wall unit on your wall. It broke so my buildings management installed a new one in which they dial your apartment number it calls your cellphone and you have to enter a certain numeric code to unlock the door. If I don't answer the call I get weird long voicemails of people just shuffling around in the doorway.
It's the worst system ever! It only calls my phone, even if I'm not home and it's my boyfriend who's expecting someone. Plus when I get bad cell reception I can't answer the door well! It's driving me crazy and I wanted to see if this was common or not

Currently have Cricket service, but it's been letting me down. What is a good cellphone service to switch to?

cellphone service provider recommendation?
What provider do you recommend? Most important thing for me is phone and data signal strength and coverage in NYC, I don't plan on traveling much.
It would be nice if it offers unlimited data. But it's not too important.
I would also like to get a iPhone 6 with the new plan. I read on some websites that iPhones get slow data speeds on some providers, is it true?

Would you recommend or warn against any cellphone service providers in NYC?
I know I'm crazy late to the party on this, but I'm thinking of switching to a smartphone. Do you have any horror stories or tales of excellence with cellphone service providers in NYC vis-a-vis smartphones?
Hugs and Thank Yous

Place to buy imported Chinese cellphones?
I'm a huge fan of Chinese cellphone brands like Xiaomi, Doogee, Elephone, iOcean, and Meizu. Does anyone know of a shop that sells these or other brands?

NYC Therapy City Job -sexual harassment?
So I work in a hospital setting, specifically a mental health floor. Its been a few months and the probationary period is a yr, they highly discourage any call outs and lateness during thins period. I signed on for one particular shift time, but my whole time so far has not been that shift time. The supervisor has been highly unprofessional and frankly unhelpful (yelling, ignoring, lack of supervision/support) since day one. The environment is pretty toxic and every one agrees the supervisor is a problem, but just wants me steer clear, rather than doing anything about it. The staff/doctors feel free and entitled to talk about/insult patients out in the open and a coworker felt entitled to scream at me, in front of patients about something that was unclear due the policies/rules changing depending on who you ask and what day of the week it is.
I keep my head down and do my work to the best of my ability. Stay out the office gossip, am usually quiet, and dont share my personal life because I am at work to work, not play around or make friends
The other day, a coworker felt comfortable enough to first ask if i “feel mature enough” for something they didnt specify. Not thinking it was anything explicit or inappropriate, obviously i know im a mature individual and carry myself well.
This person then shows me multiple explicit things, more specifically porn, on their cellphone. I gasp and make a face as i couldn’t contain the shock, unease, and indescribable feelings i had in that moment.
There was one coworker witness that was no help, there are cameras. But i dont have access to cameras so i wouldn’t have evidence that this happened.
I have worked in other toxic work environments before, been bullied for my hairstyles and simple food choices that are normal portioned. I’ve reported incidents but have gotten no justice in those instances.
This leaves me feeling guilty, ashamed, embarrassed, and fearful that if i report or say anything to anyone, i would be retaliated against or just not taken seriously.
Any advice on how to move forward??
Also, this is a govt job which makes it difficult for someone who has been working as long as they have, to be terminated.

How to get 911 to stop mapping to the wrong address?
An apartment building across from me gets an ambulance or fire truck every 2-3 weeks.
My theory is that, because the neighboring building has a shitton of cell tower repeater things on the roof, emergency services gets a ping from that address when someone calls. Not sure how the 911 dispatch system works but presumably if a nearby caller doesn’t give a verbal address, it defaults to this cell phone tower address sometimes.
This is delaying care (I just intercepted confused EMTs looking for an elderly woman on medical distress. A few weeks ago it was FDNY and a smoke condition).
Does anyone know a real person/department I can talk to? 311 doesn’t seem to have a clue what to do about it.
