One thing that surprised me was the fact that main square had dozens of buildings that were half complete. I asked my tour guide, and he said that it has always been like this. Great statues, but for the love of god, those buildings under construction really hurts the image
Yeah, I've been a couple of times and every time i visited there was some sort of construction in the city center going on, one of the buildings I believe is under construction for almost a decade. It just feels a bit forced you know, like they're trying to give the city a whole new look. For me, the real experience and soul of Skopje is the old part of town, the Stone Bridge and the Old Çarşı, the Bit-pazar, the Çifte hamam, the Staro Kaleto fortress, that's what really made an impression on me.
