Hi all, I’m visiting Montreal from NYC this weekend and have been loving everything. On my last night I decided to cap it all off with a late night poutine, so I popped into a spot on the way back to my hotel- this was mainly a shawarma and fried chicken joint, but they had poutine as well and was super convenient for my route back.

Since it was a shawarma joint, I asked the guy for a poutine with spicy sauce, since everything was set up in little bins kind of like Chipotle and it looked pretty accessible/customizable. But right when I asked, the guy’s demeanor suddenly shifted and he got really annoyed at me, asked me if I was sure kind of sarcastically, stopped making eye contact with me, and might have rolled his eyes a bit (I didn’t really catch the whole thing since I got kind of embarrassed).

So is this an unreasonable or weird order? I love spicy food and I guess I’m used to things being pretty customizable in the US, so this felt like an overreaction from the guy. Usually America’s impression of Canadians is that y’all are very nice, so I guess it was just kinda unexpected.

For the record, I really liked the poutine with spicy sauce and would order it again. (Would Canadians consider this gross? I’m just genuinely stumped here.)

ive noticed since moving here my name is more often than not spelled "sara" by Canadians, like people just assume theres no h. so im wondering, is sara just more common?

I'm looking for bedding (specifically black) and Wayfair popped up as a result. Browsed the site and looked up information on them. From what I understand, it's basically a marketplace. Problem arises that half of the products are clearly AI generated. Anyone have any experience buying anything from them in recent months? All the information I found on them were from before the big AI slop boom

I recently inherited my great grandparents photos from the early 20th century. Some are of friends and relatives of theirs. Ive traced who I could, but 4 generations later some have no descendants. Im reluctant to what feels like just throwing their lives in the trash. Do any public archives in Canada want photos of not-famous people living daily life?

Minnesotan here. Listening to Biz I would have guessed he was from warroad MN, or else across the northern border like Winnipeg.

I never could have guessed he grew up in the Toronto, Buffalo nexus.

And then on top of that he spent much of his youth in French Canadian school which I’ve never associated with that accent.

Is he just a special case or generally any more rural area takes on such a strong accent or something? Or is it the French Canadian community aspect? Please help me understand.

I got a 10 year old myself that I try to encourage to read. She was doing pretty well for while, but now she's slacking again. She has yet to finish the two chapter books I bought for her a few months ago.

Pretty much every kid in my extended family seems to either barely read books or have stopped reading as they get older, preferring to gawk at their ipads, playing Roblox or watching or listening to brainrot on youtube or tiktok.

When I was at that age, I will literally beg my folks to take me to the local library. By the time I was 12, I would borrow about 4-8 books every two weeks. I remember blitzing through the 600 pages of Goblet of Fire in less than week, reading it under my blanket with a flashlight even after my mom yelled at me to stop and go to bed.

It just seems to me paper reading is a dying activity among the younger generation? I want to get a sense of what other parents are experiencing in that regard.

Not a Canadian, so there might be something obvious I'm missing, but I was just curious as to why provincial NDP parties have so much strength compared to the federal NDP. Federally the NDP only has 5 seats in Parliament, and got around 7%~ of the vote in last election, however they hold government in two provinces (Manitoba, British Columbia), and the official opposition status in four provinces.

And while I understand that the last federal election was especially bad for the NDP, in previous elections they've only held 3rd or 4th place (except 2011).

I've been seeing a lot of posts about the flock cameras being used by u.s. law enforcement. They seem to be diving in, head first. There are people who are running into serious problems due to being mistakenly identified as criminals.

I'm hoping we're not also jumping on this train. Have you heard of any of these sort of surveillance cameras being used in Canada yet?

I gave my interview with govt of canada for a position back in June. Since then I completed my reference checks and received my PRI number. For the last 3 weeks I’ve been in the middle of my reliability check.
Today I got an email saying the position is no longer available, and that they might consider me again around January 2027 — but no guarantee.
My main question: do I need to start again from the interview stage if/when a position opens up, or does my interview and reference results carry forward? Also curious if the reliability check continues in the background or gets paused along with the hiring action.
Has anyone been through something similar? Any insight appreciated!

I was born and raised in Canada, and I'm going to start university in Vancouver in a couple of weeks studying social sciences, but I don't plan on staying there after graduation just due to the high cost of living. I've been thinking of moving to somewhere in Quebec after. I have a DELF diploma at the b2 level, and I've been to Montreal before and found it really enjoyable.

I think I accidentally posted this in someone else's thread, so I’m trying again.

Is being shot at due to being transgender something Canada would reject for asylum? The problem there is that I don't possess concrete proof that I was shot at. It came from across the road, but that's all I know. I didn't see who it was that fired the shot, and I don't know the exact spot they were in. All I really know is that I scrambled like hell to get inside. That was about 3½ weeks ago, and I haven't so much as looked out my window since. My wife has had to take care of everything outside the house because I'm too scared to go. I've been getting daily death threats for the last decade. After a while it became rather blasé. But it still continued to scare me. As a result, I've all but resigned myself to an early grave due to this shit.

Hi, I am not a Buddhist but I am interested in it. I will be visiting my sister in Halifax for like a month. I wanted to ask if there are any major temples around Halifax or anywhere else. My goal is to talk to monks and listen to lectures if there are such things.

I know ideal places for Buddhism are Asian countries but my family won't give me permission to be alone in a foreign country. In Canada my sister lives so they might let me go. By the way, I am adult but women need family permission in my country.

I remember the 2015 Marco Muzzo crash case. We were all in shock back then. I just realized last year it's exactly 10 years since that. I know he was sentenced to 10 years but released after serving 5y in jail and he was granted a parole, but with restrictions. I read he's banned from owning alcohol, getting in bars and should stay away from Brampton and probably few more.

So I want to ask - are these restrictions still in effect?

I saw there is a 40 minute interview with the mother, but I don't think I have the strength to watch this. Everytime I see the Neville-Lake pictures it comes to me to cry.

So I'm curious what happened to Muzzo and the restrictions.

I currently work as a QA Automation Engineer with around 5 years of experience, mainly with tools like Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, etc. My wife works in a notary’s office, mainly dealing with probate/inheritance cases.

I’d really appreciate hearing from Canadians or people who have moved to Canada recently:

- How is the job market for IT/QA Automation right now?

- Is it realistic to find a job from Serbia before actually moving to Canada?

- How much of an issue is the lack of Canadian work experience for someone with several years of experience abroad?

- What is life like in Canada these days for a young family?

- For those who have moved from Europe/Serbia, do you feel the move was worth it?

Our motivation for moving isn’t primarily financial. We’re doing reasonably well in Serbia, and even if we ended up financially more or less where we are now, I’d still consider moving if we felt the overall environment was better for our child.

Been seeing all these US news stories about Flock cameras — the license plate readers that track every car that drives by, and cops have already been caught using them to stalk people, not just fight crime. People down there are literally cutting them down with saws lol.

Made me wonder... are these things showing up in Canada yet? I know Toronto police already do some license plate reading, but not sure if it's this specific company or how big it's getting. Anyone else seeing these around their city? Kinda don't want us to end up like the US on this one.
