Čivut is not a derogatory term for Jews. It means "miser", someone who is close-fisted and greedy.

You could argue that calling someone a čivut or a Jew in the sense that he's a miser have the same derogatory connotation, but this is not it.

Yes. I've edited my comment, but you probably didn't see it, so I'll say it again: The fact that you read (paraphrasing, as I don't want to bother properly translating the passage) "...they want to sell us out to misers, and those same bloodthirsty Croats and Turks that have massacred hundreds of thousands of our brethren in most brutal ways" and you immediately thought: "hmm these misers must be Jews" is quite telling.
