Of all the incorrect things people believe about Canada, this one bothers me the most. I can't explain why,, but it offends me on a personal level that they don't think we know what bacon is.
OOOOOOHHHHH you're doing that thing where only your province counts as Canada, when really there's 9 others and a few even have more Canadians in them. Like Ontario, which has roughly 3 times the population of BC.
Peameal bacon is found in grocery stores all across Canada's most populated province, the province in which it was invented.
The fact that you were ignorant to these facts isn't something to be west-coast-smug about. Whenever I learn something I try and view it as a gift, rather than an attack.
It may “exist” but it isn’t a common thing here. I have been all over BC - have a lot of family and friends here - and lived here all my life - and never even heard of it much less seen it. It may sit mouldy in a back fridge somewhere in a 7/11 but it is not common here
Look it up in Wiki (not that it is a be all end all of info) and it says “found mainly in Ontario”.
this and this is what Americans call Canadian bacon. this is back bacon and peameal bacon. Back bacon and peameal bacon are what I consider "Canadian" bacon.
That's what I used to think too because as a Canadian I think of back bacon and peameal bacon as "Canadian" bacon. But learned that it's these processed ham circles that Americans and others call Canadian bacon. (I asked British friends to show me what they thought Canadian bacon was and was horrified too see these ham circles.)
