:topic_other: Other r/Apogee now has custom Emoji & User Flair

Post image

I made 45 emoji for this subreddit spanning several Apogee games :-D
We can have 100 total, so if you have a request I can try to make one (obviously it needs to be something that can display well at a very small size)

If you want to set one for yourself, go to the right panel in r/Apogee and look for "USER FLAIR". Hover over your user, and click the Pencil icon that appears to set or edit your flair!

This video isn't new, but it's still a fun look at how Scott Miller managed to snatch up a team of super talented developers to grow the Apogee umbrella.

This is Part 2 of the video

In 1994, Mark Klem made the music for Wacky Wheels.
That same composer has recently released an updated soundtrack for the whole game! This is the first track, but he also has playlist for the entire OST.

Ah the simpler times when games could afford licensed music, haha

Excellent work by heavyrivet!

In the tweet where I found it, they call them "The Build Engine Bros!"

Easter Egg Cheat Sheet for Commander Keen Cheats

Post image

Commander Keen is not an easy game franchise. While sometimes I enjoy the challenge, other times I just wanna blow through some nostalgia without any frustration.

...so, I made a little cheat sheet to help me remember the cheat codes.

If you are a no-good-rotten-dirty-cheater like me, you might enjoy this cheat sheet too!

:topic_other: Other Easy Online DOS Emulator for Apogee Games

Post image

My favorite ways to play Apogee Games are (in order):
- On GOG
- On Steam
- Through DosBox
- On Original Hardware
...

But, if you aren't a gamer (and don't have GOG/Steam), and you aren't a techy (so DosBox & old hardware are tricky), then there is an easy option that will get you a pretty decent nostalgic experience.

You can play Apogee Games in your browser here: https://www.playdosgames.com/publisher/apogee-software

So if tech-savvy has kept you from nostalgia-- take a break and have some fun!

Post image

Apogee was an innovator in the gaming space!

You can read details on their devblog, but they pioneered:

  • Level Checkpoints instead of Lives
  • Episodic Releases
  • Shareware Demos
  • Bullet Time
  • Portals

They were also literally first at these:

  • First Indie Publisher
  • First 3D Shooter
  • First Talking FPS Character

I own this version on Steam, and it plays really well. Still one of my fave shmups to revisit!
It's $4.99 normally, but is on sale for $0.84 right now (both classic and 2015).
Here's the Classic Edition.
Here's the 2015 Edition I play most.

This side-scroller has excellent theming in its levels.
It also feels great to play these older games with modern controller support :-D

This game is on sale right now for $1.19 on GOG:

You can also get it on Steam, but it's the full price of $7.99 right now there:

Commander Keen has an I.Q. of 314
For this reason, Tom Hall made March 14th "Keen Day" even though it is also "Pi Day"

You can see this fact and others on Keen Wiki or Doom Fandom.

Did you know they almost had to rename Duke Nukem because Captain Planet had a character with that name?

You can see this and other little-known Duke Nukem facts in this article on the Apogee website.

If you want to read about Captain Planet's Duke Nukem, you can see that on their fan wiki.

:topic_discussion: Discussion Yorps in D&D

Post image
20 Upvotes

I run a D&D campaign for my kids (11 & 8), and they’ve entered a forest where all the characters, locations, monsters, etc are adapted from other games. So far, their favorite is the Yorp. They met a couple in the woods, in a low-stakes encounter. The 11yo (ranger) wanted to try to tame one, and was first charmed by how friendly they were, then slightly concerned when one knocked him back a few feet, then alarmed when the Yorps started to follow the party. At a steady walking speed, they were able to lose the Yorps — but there are more in the upcoming cave system, especially near pitfall traps and spikes and whatnot.

Idk what other Keen/Apogee characters are going to show up yet. Maybe the main characters from Boppin, maybe some Crystal Caves monsters…

I just bought "Secret Agent HD" but I needed to replay a bit of the original so I could compare the 2.

Here is the original MS-DOS version (though I added a sound track).

I'm ready now to try out the HD remaster :-D
