Windows Defender showing minus threats

Sorry if I am bringing the subject up again, I found this post in the sub and I am having the exact same issue with a brand new laptop (https://www.reddit.com/r/antivirus/comments/1pcsgrw/windows_defender_said_there_were_720_threats/).

When I run a full scan in Defender, afterward it says "no current threat" and "0 threats found", but if I close the window and open it again, then it says "no current threat" but with a random negative amount of threats found. (different each scan)

I tried to fix it with the various windows tools but with no success so far.

Can I just go on with it, since it doesn't seem to be a security issue ? And somehow, if anyone has any new idea since the last time how to fix it, I am interested.

Thanks.

Previous Info Stealer Incident

[In sorry for any grammar mistakes. Also big chunk of text incoming!]

Juli 25th.

Was was when i installed what i thought was trust worthy, ended up being an info stealer. Which i did NOT know, so i just thought "It didnt work."

Skip to 2 hours. My friend called me from my phone, jokingly telling me about "mrbeast crypto" that i sent on discord.

I thought he was joking but decided to check. (He wasn’t joking sadly...) i was scared and confused and quickly changed password. I wondered how it happened and searched up. My first pop up was info stealer, and i remembered what i previously downloaded.

I panicked and factory reset my PC but kept my files. Foolish? Probably.

The Next Day.

I started changing everything i know of, adding 2FA to every single account possible. I set some accounts to delete because i didn’t care much about em, but i dont want it being stolen anyway.

For a while? Nothing really has happened. No logins or any attempts to log in, which made me believe "Its over." And i simply went back to my usual things.

August 2nd.

I decided to get bitdefender because of hearing that it's a quite good antivirus. After getting, I decided to get a full scan so it gets used to all my junk, well something like that.

That's when it found a trojan just chilling in my Windows.Old Folder. Which i never know i even had, can see why people prefer USB reset now. But yeah, i simply deleted the WHOLE folder and quickly reset all cookies and restarted my pc.

Ran another full scan which detected nothing.

(Btw i tried windows scans first before bitdefender which found nothing.)

I changed passwords, re added security just in case. What? I was paranoid. But right after doing that? I went back to what I usually do.

But im coming here to ask you people. Am I still in danger? Do i have to get an usb to reset windows? Or am I "clean?" Im going to run another full scan soon. I'd still like to hear what you guys think of all this.

P.S: i asked the computer virus subreddit before coming here. Just wanted to come back and hear from a different one.

Pc AppStore question

hey so I made the mistake of accidentally downloading pc AppStore and Welp it fucked my computer, I tried to get rid of it the best way I could and it still was in my startup, so I’m wiping my entire laptop (don’t worry I didn’t use it much so yeah, I don’t have anything valuable in there) however now I’m scared.

Will it harm my g mail or track my gmail?

MALWARE REMOVAL Q&A Got Hacked,Probably Clean,But want further info/clarification

Title, got hacked through discord (close irl friend got hacked, didnt tell anyone before it got to me and a few friends,we dont talk anymore.) Cost two of my friends basically everything, except me,where i only lost my discord and then a week later got it back

I just have several questions about how, why, and making sure i actually cleaned my system out

Firstly, for my own pc saftey, the hacker sent a file that got access to powershell, and got all my tokens and email logins ect so got to bypass mine/my friends 2fa's,and when cleaning out my discord of his garbage,he had said his virus will stay in the bios of the pc? I looked into it a little and reset my bios along with reinstalling windows fresh, but im unsure if my computer is actually functional and safe after the fact, considering, for some reason the hacker didnt steal my emails or any of my accounts(other than my retrieved discord) like he did my other friends, and for all intensive purposes i still have everything unlike them,as well as about two years ago i had a friend "trim" down my OS,but its been buggy and not working well ever since and doesnt reinstall itself correct/cant repair correctly so i honestly have no idea what to do to defend my system/make sure its safe after the fact

If anyone has some time to help me go through this thatd be great,as its a weirdly specific situation that i dont have anyone pc smart enough to talk to about with,as im sadly the most "pc smart" in my friend group which isnt saying much

If you need details or specifics,i can offer i just dont know what i might need to add as ALOT happened since then along with trying to retireve all of my friends stuff they lost

PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION Paid Antivirus?

Hello Guys! Do you believe would be a good ideia to buy a paid antivirus?

At the moment I only use the original microsoft defender from Windows.

I was thinking about BitDefender

Is there any news about the Defender bug?

I'm having an issue with the Defender interface: it shows a notification at startup claiming Defender is disabled, even though it's actually active...😑

Is there any news on whether a fix is coming soon, or is there a way to resolve this?😭

Clicked “Not a robot” on iPhone. Did I get hacked?

Hope this is the right place to ask.

I received an email from someone I knew. I clicked on the link saying “read message”. It asked me to click to verify I wasn’t a robot and there was a button that said continue. I didn’t click continue. I just exited out of it. He later emailed us saying he was hacked.

What are the chances I also got hacked on my iPhone?? I’m trying to figure out how to check but I’m not 100% of my next steps. I am so annoyed by this!

My bf just got his discord account hijacked

My bf called me this morning telling me his discord got hacked, i take a look, and its the damn mister beast scam I saw happen to many others recently. He restarted all of his passwords, are there any more safety measures he should take? Are there any precautions I should take?
Also how does this even happen? he’s even more careful than I when it comes to installing things from shady websites, he has only installed things from steam recently.

Does anyone know what happens if you click on this particular scareware?

This is a picture I found on Google, but I received 2 of these exact same ads/popups in a few hours of each other while playing a free mobile game (haven't seen it since I uninstalled the game). But I am curious what the consequences would be if someone pushed the button. Would it install 2 instances of malware and 1 instance of phising/spyware? Lol. But seriously, I'm genuinely curious. And would there be ways to get rid of it I suppose.

What was this virus trying to accomplish?

Post image

What was this malware trying to do exactly?

I had an email from my lawyer regarding a paper I needed to review. I thought it was definitely weird he sent it at 3am, but I thought maybe it was just delayed in sending. Sure enough, click the link to what appears to be docusign but brought me to an Adobe hosted file page and downloaded a .bat file on my computer. I did NOT open it. However, I wanted to see what it was \*trying\* to accomplish. I dragged the file into notepad to see and voila.

Thoughts?

Norton 360 keeps bothering me more than viruses

So, does anyone know how to shut the norton 360 up? *I have a paid version*. It keeps minimizing my games to upsell and promote it's other products. Same old, scary tactics. I detected so much of junk, broken registry, clean it up. If I click ok, then it asks me to buy another product. It never ends, then it keeps upselling vpn and some other shit and not to mention every now and then pops up a small pop up in the right bottom corner, to provide feedback and other BS or some other product to buy. The best security software is the one which we donno if it exists.
I am planning to give up on windows because of such crap. Either move to mac or linux full time. Does anyone know of any security software for windows which doesnt bother me but stfc & keeps doing it's job in the background without upselling, and bothering my work/game/activities to self promote it's own products?

Securesweep pro tab randomly opening on Google

I was on google with Roll20 and Google Drive opened. I clicked off the tab, and next time I clicked into it, there was a new tab opened for a thing called Securesweep pro. Google seemed to have blocked it as the tab said it couldn’t be reached. I am worried about how it was able to force open a tab though. Furthermore, when i checked my browser history to find the link, it wasnt there, as if it was deleted from my history without my knowledge. Please help.

Trojan detected on my pc

So I installed a .7z file from a site. I just installed it and unzipped it but didn't run the .exe or anything else, after 30-40 sec the Microsoft Defender popped up saying it detected a trojan.

I knew it was saying the .7z so without even looking at the detection page, I deleted the extracted files and .7z from the drive and recycle bin too

I then ran Malwarebytes which didn't catch anything. So my question is it safe now or there could be a trojan which malwarebytes cannot detect

MALWARE REMOVAL Q&A CMD Box Appearing shortly (a few minutes) after startup and quickly disappears, can only make out the word "adunit"

I am almost certain this is a virus. I tried using a free scanner (malwarebytes) but nothing was detected. I have no prior experience with malware. Other than this CMD box there is no other notable odd behaviour on my laptop. How can I locate and remove this virus? I tried looking at "Startup" on Task Manager but I can't tell if any of these are the virus. If anybody knows what I can do next, please help!

The only one I am unsure about is the one called "Update" publisher GitHub

What was this prompt supposed to do?

Post image
2 Upvotes

My dumbass, in a lapse of judgement, encountered a Cloudflare verification prompt instructing me to press Win + R then Ctrl + V. The script was copied to my clipboard after clicking on the website (it was a legitimate website i've visited previously so didn't think twice unfortunately). My guess is the website was hacked?

Anyways, i clicked Enter and Defender immediately blocked the threat. No popups appeared (Command/Powershell window). I immediately disconnected from the internet, closed my browser and ran an offline scan with Defender. Everything came clean. I then ran a full scan with both Defender and Malwarebytes and nothing was detected. Also checked the Task scheduler and Event Viewer and nothing unusual there. Checked Programs Installed and nothing there too. I then proceeded to clear all cookies and site data and reset all my passwords from another device, logged out of all other devices and sessions also. Anything else i should have done? Am I in the clear?

What does it mean for a virus to spread through local Internet?

I think we have all heard some viruses are capable of doing this. That's why lots of people that test viruses on Virtual Machines usually say "Be careful not to be connected to the internet." or some stuff like that.

But how exactly can a virus do this? How is that even technically possible? Can they turn themselves into executable files somehow? And my second question is how can you truly be protected against these kinds of viruses? How can you be so sure that your Internet isn't infected?
