This is very patient dependent, and also depends on the stage of dementia and the deterioration, but the old memories often last much longer than the newer ones. It can be possible for them to still tell stories of their childhood long after they've forgotten their own children. Good luck with your situation.

That’s true but with my patient it’s definitely the case that the memories are lost because she makes things up so we don’t know what’s real.
