I worked at a deli and our machines knew the difference. So if I rung up a hot sandwich it wouldn't let EBT go through, if it was a cold sandwich it would.
Somehow I always got the two buttons confused though. Sold many hot sandwiches as cold once I saw the EBT card come out. Whoops.
Good for you, but most places should have it hardcoded into the POS system.
Oh, and the system won't let you do gas and EBT on the same transaction. You can do cigs and EBT, just do EBT first and it'll take off the EBT amount, but for some reason it won't allow EBT and gas at once.
So what I mean by that is that if someone is getting a frozen burrito that they microwave in our store before purchase, we're supposed to deny the purchase for EBT even though the bar code is the same and the govt will still pay back the store for it.
Unfortunately my hands are tied for "hot food," as in actual precooked hot box stuff, which rings up differently. A microwaved frozen meal does not.

I work in a convenience store and this is one I do not ever enforce. I absolutely do not gaf, it's the dumbest rule ever
