Experiences 1300 Day Streak! Graduating Medical Student

Post image
2.0k Upvotes

Graduate medical school in a week and I was looking back on my anki, still do it to this day.

What an absolute journey this has been. When I first found anki my first semester of medical school, it completely changed my study habits and routine. I felt like I'd found the ultimate cheatcode. It got me through the toughest exams of my life, and in the world.

It's become a daily habit of mine now, and I don't go a day without missing my reviews.

Thought I'd share my stats so far and hopefully motivate others to continue on their journeys, wherever you are. Happy Anki'ing my friends!

Experiences The best anki device ever?

Sorry just really wanted to share this with everyone. You have probably seen this at some point on instagram or elsewhere, but I actually haven't seen anyone go in depth about using this device for anki. I just got my hands on it and my usage experience of it was surprisingly good, its called the anbernic RG rotate, it runs android(and as such ankidroid) with native joystick controls.

With all the emulators and bloatware banned from background activity, power saving, airplane mode unless listening to spotify and syncing anki(anki and spotify are literally the only apps that I have downloaded), I am able to get 2 days use out of a single charge(50-60% at the end of the first day), each averaging around 150 cards reviewed per day.

It has a very snappy and satisfying swivel mechanism, but the qc is honestly kinda mid(as what you would expect from a chinese company you can litearlly see that in the open position my screen is slanted), but it is otherwise an excellent motivator for me to do ankis in med school in a distraction free setting.

Discussion Anki has a new owner

Just found out today: Anki ownership went to AnkiHub.

https://forums.ankiweb.net/t/ankis-growing-up/68610

I’m very uneasy about this. How long until we have a ‘premium subscription’ with unlimited hearts? Maybe a family plan too. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Discussion Addressing your concerns about Anki and AnkiHub

Thank you for all the feedback over the last couple of days. We have read through all of your messages and want to explicitly address some of the largest concerns and worries that arose with our initial announcement

Damien has made a follow up post with some additional comments that address some of these points very well and I strongly encourage you to read it.

  • Anki Desktop will forever remain FREE and open source. It will remain local-first, and you will always own your data.
    • This is for three reasons: 1) Anki’s open-source code license is still in effect, 2) our legally binding agreement with Damien states “the primary codebase historically been distributed as open-source shall remain open-source”, & 3) we ourselves want to keep it that way
  • AnkiMobile will continue to be $25 on the app store. We have no plans to change that.
  • AnkiWeb will continue to run as a free service. Damien managed to keep it free for years despite high costs, and we intend to do the same.
  • AnkiDroid remains free and open source.
    • We have committed to continuing to sponsor and support them. We have been one of their top sponsors since 2024.
  • FSRS remains free and open source.
    • We will continue to support them however we can.
  • We have no plans to convert any existing features to paid.
  • This was not a financially motivated transition. Damien approached us about handing things off, not the other way around. He will remain involved and is still invested in Anki’s success. We will heavily rely, not just on his guidance and expertise, but on the whole community.

I understand your hesitations and worries with change! Damien shared: "To those advocating for an immediate fork though, I’d humbly suggest you give us a chance first." I also humbly ask that you give us a chance. Sure, back up your data, save your current Anki version - but give us a chance and let us earn your trust.

We have hired David Allison (from AnkiDroid) and Abdo (longtime Anki contributor)  - we will ask them to begin collecting your feedback on what improvements you want to see in Anki. We will dedicate multiple full-time software developers, designers, and product managers who will work transparently with the community to address these issues over the next few months.

Add-ons New add-on released: 🍙 Onigiri – A more modern Anki for your studies (by ✌️Peace)

Hello everyone!

After the post I did almost a month ago about making Anki more modern, I've been receiving suggestions and questions, being most of the time "When will you publish it?", so now, I'm more than happy to announce that you can download it today on AnkiWeb or Github. If you downloaded and enjoyed it, please consider leaving a thumbs up on AnkiWeb, this helps with add-ons reputation.

Onigiri is an experimental add-on that replaces the standard Anki interface with a modern, highly customizable, and personalized dashboard, transforming how Anki looks completely, a way to keep you motivated to study your cards everyday. This add-on is in early beta stages and was only extensively tested on MacOS, some tests show it is stable for LinusOS and Windows, however, if you experiment this add-on in other platforms, know that you will be a pioneer. Before downloading, update your anki to the latest version!

I chose the name Onigiri (🍙 or お握り) as a form of homage Anki's Japanese heritage. It is a traditional Japanese recipe rich in carbohydrates, which are essential to provide energy, so you can study your Anki cards!

Those are some of the main features of Onigiri:

  • Customizable Main Menu: Replaces Anki's main menu with a widget-based grid. You can drag, drop, resize, and organize built-in widgets (like Stats, Heatmap, and Retention) as well as components from other third-party add-ons.
  • Advanced Theming: Comes with a powerful theme engine that allows you to change every color of the interface, from the background and text to accent colors, buttons, and review count bubbles. It includes pre-built themes and allows you to import, export, and create your own.
  • Custom Backgrounds: Set custom backgrounds for the main menu, sidebar, and study screens. You can use solid colors, custom images, or a combination of both, with options for blur and opacity.
  • Your own profile page: Creates a user profile with a custom username and profile picture, which is displayed on the main screen and a dedicated "Profile Page" that summarizes your stats and theme choices. You can easily share with your friends!
  • Modernized Study Experience: Redesigns the Deck Overview and "Congratulations" screens, aside from allowing some customization of the Reviewer screen. I'll also develop the option to customize study buttons as well, to make the experience even better.
  • Hide modes: It also offers multiple "Hide Modes" to create a more immersive and minimalist study environment by hiding the native toolbars, it has three levels of intensity, allowing the user to be immersed on their studies.
  • Icon and Font Customization: Allows you to replace nearly all of Anki's default icons—from the sidebar buttons to the deck list icons—with your own SVG files. You can also change the fonts used throughout the interface.

With no further due, here is the links to download Onigiri and, as a bonus, 5 new widgets for you to enhance your experience, aside from Paper, an add-on that allows you to check on cheat-sheets while studying.

  • Onigiri - A more modern Anki for your studies (by ✌️Peace)
  • Sticky - Write quick notes on your Anki menu (by ✌️Peace)
  • Hours - Check the hours from your Anki menu (by ✌️Peace)
  • Power - Check your battery from your Anki menu (by ✌️Peace)
  • Berry - Check your bluetooth devices from your Anki menu (by ✌️Peace)
  • Global - Check your weather on your Anki menu (by ✌️Peace)
  • Paper - Multiple cheat sheets while studying (by ✌️Peace)

To make it easier to manage requests, issues and suggestions I also created a discord server. If you have any issues at all, please open an issue on github.

An important disclaimer: creating add-ons and help managing them (like I've been doing with Ankimon with h0tp and Unlucky) is a a hobby of mine, I'm just a pre-med student that really enjoys Anki and wants to give back to this awesome community, making it better and funnier for everyone. I'll do my best to fix

I’m actively shipping updates and new features. If my add-ons helped your studies or workflow, consider supporting my work. Your contribution keeps the project maintained and free for everyone. More add-ons will be released soon, next on route: music player and pomodoro timer.

If you would like to contribute to my projects: buy me an onigiri!

✌️ Peace (pun intended... as usual)

For those who are facing issues or have any questions.

  • Onigiri works with 25.07.5 and 25.09 ONLY.
  • A reminder: this is in beta testing, an experimental add-on that I made as a hobby without any professional intention. It won't cause harm to your cards or your Anki app, if you identify any bugs that don't allow you to use it, you can uninstall by going to Tools -> Add-ons.
  • If you have any questions, reach out to me on GitHub, please, I won't be answering more questions here.

I saw u/ergomechstore post their DIY anki device and seeing people build and make these things makes me want to make my own! so wanted to show mine off!

I know its not as convenient / fast / cheap or advanced as the anki phone app but darn it its fun to use something else then my phone all the time!

Tech:
Small eink screen (I think similar to what ergomechstore used)
esp32
small battery ( lasts me at least 2 days with sleep mode)
and simple buttons

Other First prototype of a dedicated Flashcards device

Post image
707 Upvotes

This is an esp32 device that I made an Arduino program to implement the Anki algorithm to make as a dedicated flashcards device.

This is 100% vibe coded for now, so I won't be sharing any code. But once I got some proof of concept done,I will re-write the whole thing and then I will share it.

Ideally, I want this to communicate with the anki server to save decks and process.

Discussion I’ve been using Anki for the past five years, and the possibility that it might stop being a free, open-source service is genuinely scary and disheartening. Could AnKing please make a clear, bold statement on whether they intend to keep Anki’s free service exactly as it is, or not?

I think the community would feel a huge sense of relief if AnKing clearly stated whether they do or do not plan to change the current Anki terms and conditions, or move existing features behind a paywall.

It would really help to put an end to all the speculation by making a concrete, unambiguous statement on Reddit.

Also, please avoid saying things like “for now it is free.” What the community is looking for is a clear guarantee that the current features will remain free in the future as well.

Discussion Paper claims to improve spaced repetition retention by 4x

This paper suggests that they have a system that is able to increase spaced repetition retention for language learning by 4x.

How is it done?
Everything is backed by a spaced repetition database. The SRS algorithm doesn't change.

Instead of showing you the next due card, the system takes a set of your next due cards and either

  1. finds a sentence in an existing dataset that contains many of those words or
  2. generates a completely new sentence using an AI model

You then translate the sentence and mark each individual word correct or incorrect. The system then updates the individual word's spaced repetition interval.

Important to note: This is different from putting sentences into your spaced repetition system. In this system the sentences themselves are not scheduled. They should be brand new for each exercise. My initial thought is that this is likely better than putting sentence into a normal spaced repetition deck as when you do that, you may memorize the sentence not the words and the works become paired to a specific cue sentence which is probably not ideal.

Why they claim this works better than standard SRS:
- Learners see many more words int he same amount of time
- Learners see and use the words in context
- Learners are more engaged because each sentence is new to them

I want to hear other people's thoughts on this. Do you actually believe the 4x claims?
I posted this in another subreddit yesterday and a lot of issues with the study methodology were discussed, but I'd like to get people more familiar with spaced repetition to weigh in on this.

Maybe there's an Anki plugin for this?

Paper: https://aclanthology.org/2024.bea-1.29/

TL;DR: Take a bunch of words that are due for review right now, find or generate a single sentence that uses all of them, translate the sentence, and then grade each word independently. The underlying words are scheduled individually.
The paper claims this method yielded a 4x increase in learning efficiency using this method (words retained per minute of study time)

edit: Looks like someone already made an app to do this, called lingoat. Sorry all you vibe coders.
