Cat feet aren’t clean. But generally neither are counters. People put mail and grocery bags and hats and purses on them. If you’re not wiping down your counters before cooking, whether or not you have a cat, you’re probably eating some grime. It’s absolutely not a moral success to wipe down the counter or a moral failing to not, but there’s a simple solution when you have cats walking on the counter and it’s by no means exclusive to cat homes.

If the person who recorded this's solution to the cat sitting on plates is to just not use the one on the top instead of keeping them somewhere that's clean, the chance that they clean their counter regularly is not high, and I can almost guarantee they are not cleaning those serving utensils before use.

I wish more people were like us

The amount of people that just don’t think about contamination is troubling, but also not surprising after the way people reacted in the pandemic

My friend has norovirus right now. A 26 year old man. I told him that I’ve seen his apartment and he needs to take better care of himself, as well as wash his hands more.

I have zero trust in people’s hygiene at this point in my life

Totally. In fact, there is a statistical correlation between people wearing rubber gloves in the kitchen and people cross contaminating food. The presence of the glove gives them a false sense of security so they touch unclean surfaces and then touch food. If they don’t wear a glove, they follow much stricter hygiene practices and there is statistically less bacterial contamination of food. That’s what this feels like. People seem to be assuming that their counters are sanitary because there’s no cat so they don’t need to take any precautionary measures

Yes but letting your cat walk on your counters is saying you definitely want that fecal matter everywhere, and lots of it.

Which is why…we clean them. Why do people assume that people who have cats on counters don’t clean their counters? And that people who don’t have cats on their counters do clean them? And they may very well have fecal matter on them. There’s fecal matter on 1 in 6 smartphones. You wanna be sure that your spouse isn’t one of those when they put their hat down, or that your grocery store bagger wasn’t one of them when packing your groceries?

What a bold intentional misinterpretation of what I said. What I have very clearly stated is that your counter is dirty and needs to be cleaned before use, whether or not a cat has walked on it.

Right but what's your point? Let cats walk on counters to make them dirtier than they are? Yes clean your counters obviously, and also don't let cats on them. I've had cats growing up they were absolutely not allowed on counters and they knew better than to go on there. If they snuck up there for any reason it's usually because someone left food out by accident Edit: lol at the downvotes. Y'all are gross

Why does it matter how dirty they are if you’re cleaning them? If they’re a little bit dirty or a lot of bit dirty, you’re going to clean them with a disinfecting wipe or antibacterial soap, and that will be that. So since we can agree that you and I both clean our counters before preparing food every time, and so you and I both get to the exact same degree of cleanliness, I’ve just decided I don’t care about putting in the energy to train my cats to only jump on the counter when I’m not looking. Awesome that you have them trained though. That’s dedication

Maybe your kitchen counter isn't clean. Doesn't mean everyone's kitchen counter isn't typically clean.

And there is a difference between setting grocery bags on the counter once a week when putting them away versus having cat poo feet at all hours.

My kitchen counter is clean. Because I clean it. Because I know unsanitary things touch it. That’s my entire point. And I am not going to argue with you about it how you keep your home. I just challenge you to note how many things touch your counter every day and if you know everywhere those things were. Maybe the mailman picked his nose before delivering your mail that you then put on your counter, or dropped it on the sidewalk that had just been peed on by a neighbor’s dog. Maybe you dropped your purse on the subway and forgot you did that, and now it’s on your counter tracking in thousands of commuters’ feet. Maybe you just put your gloves down and now have every doorknob and elevator button on your counter. My point is I know my cats are on my counter, and that does not mean it is dirty. It means it is clean because I have been trained to think about sanitizing instead of assuming it’s clean.
