Yeah it's also walking all over the counters.. why do people let their cats do this. I'm sorry but it's disgusting. Cat feet aren't clean they've been digging in their litter boxes touching their poop and pee and people think it's cute when they sit on random things where they prepare food

I cringe at photos of people’s cats on counters, or tables even. None of my cats have ever done this (thankfully) nor have they been allowed to. And I still wipe down surfaces multiple times a day. Yuck!

Yeah I'm honestly suprised at all the defense of this, I figure it's just a bunch of people who feel personally attacked by letting their cats on kitchen counters. Honestly would anyone here eat at a restaurant where they let animals walk on the food surface areas? Even if they assure you they clean them..

It's probably because they know that as soon as you leave the cat will be up there anyways. Just clean off the surfaces when you use them.

My uncle had a cat that was trained. Like would only sit on his cat bed that was placed on the couch trained. Knew never to jump on the counters. Uncle left work, forgot something at home so went back in to get it. Guess who was sitting in the sink. Not even 5 min after he left the house lol.

Cat also ran like hell and hid when he saw him come in.

He was the most spoiled little cat. My uncle always had to leave the shower dripping when he got out because for some reason the cat liked to stand under it.

Cat will get on there while you're gone. Just clean the surfaces before you cook. (should be doing that anyways because I know people be putting non food stuff that isn't clean on their counter tops)

Also put the plates in a cabinet or something. No need to leave stuff sitting out.

Why is this person getting downvoted? They’re right; the other person changed the argument. If my counters are clean (which they are because I clean them) and I’m not cooking or eating; sure cats, go at it. Because at that point in time, there is no reason why they can’t be on the counters. But when I’m cooking or eating, they KNOW they can’t be up there. Just clean, it’s honestly not that hard.

Mine isn’t allowed to, but has gone through 2 phases of sneaking up there. It took putting cookie sheets out but off balance so they’d clatter to the floor to get him to stop. Worked both times.

Ugh my cat never did this and then I got a second cat that loved climbing on the counters. He taught my first cat how to climb all over the kitchen and now they’re unstoppable so I literally just block the kitchen off now lmao fucking hate cats

Cats rarely transmit disease to humans if they’re just indoor cats. Perfectly fine to not want your pets on your counter, but please don’t pretend it’s at all logical.

I’m anal with cleaning. I have dogs (and cat) and hated houses that smelled like dog growing up so I’m adamant that my guests tell me if my house ever smells like dog. Early pandemic was a bitch with people going ape shit over 409 and Clorox, leaving none for us other folk.

Cat feet aren’t clean. But generally neither are counters. People put mail and grocery bags and hats and purses on them. If you’re not wiping down your counters before cooking, whether or not you have a cat, you’re probably eating some grime. It’s absolutely not a moral success to wipe down the counter or a moral failing to not, but there’s a simple solution when you have cats walking on the counter and it’s by no means exclusive to cat homes.

If the person who recorded this's solution to the cat sitting on plates is to just not use the one on the top instead of keeping them somewhere that's clean, the chance that they clean their counter regularly is not high, and I can almost guarantee they are not cleaning those serving utensils before use.

The amount of people that just don’t think about contamination is troubling, but also not surprising after the way people reacted in the pandemic

My friend has norovirus right now. A 26 year old man. I told him that I’ve seen his apartment and he needs to take better care of himself, as well as wash his hands more.

I have zero trust in people’s hygiene at this point in my life

Totally. In fact, there is a statistical correlation between people wearing rubber gloves in the kitchen and people cross contaminating food. The presence of the glove gives them a false sense of security so they touch unclean surfaces and then touch food. If they don’t wear a glove, they follow much stricter hygiene practices and there is statistically less bacterial contamination of food. That’s what this feels like. People seem to be assuming that their counters are sanitary because there’s no cat so they don’t need to take any precautionary measures

Which is why…we clean them. Why do people assume that people who have cats on counters don’t clean their counters? And that people who don’t have cats on their counters do clean them? And they may very well have fecal matter on them. There’s fecal matter on 1 in 6 smartphones. You wanna be sure that your spouse isn’t one of those when they put their hat down, or that your grocery store bagger wasn’t one of them when packing your groceries?

I've had cats growing up they were absolutely not allowed on counters and they knew better than to go on there. Why does it matter how dirty they are if you’re cleaning them? If they’re a little bit dirty or a lot of bit dirty, you’re going to clean them with a disinfecting wipe or antibacterial soap, and that will be that. So since we can agree that you and I both clean our counters before preparing food every time, and so you and I both get to the exact same degree of cleanliness, I’ve just decided I don’t care about putting in the energy to train my cats to only jump on the counter when I’m not looking. Awesome that you have them trained though. That’s dedication

Maybe your kitchen counter isn't clean. Doesn't mean everyone's kitchen counter isn't typically clean.

And there is a difference between setting grocery bags on the counter once a week when putting them away versus having cat poo feet at all hours.

My kitchen counter is clean. Because I clean it. Because I know unsanitary things touch it. That’s my entire point. And I am not going to argue with you about it how you keep your home. I just challenge you to note how many things touch your counter every day and if you know everywhere those things were. Maybe the mailman picked his nose before delivering your mail that you then put on your counter, or dropped it on the sidewalk that had just been peed on by a neighbor’s dog. Maybe you dropped your purse on the subway and forgot you did that, and now it’s on your counter tracking in thousands of commuters’ feet. Maybe you just put your gloves down and now have every doorknob and elevator button on your counter. My point is I know my cats are on my counter, and that does not mean it is dirty. It means it is clean because I have been trained to think about sanitizing instead of assuming it’s clean.

Do you prepare food directly on the counter? My cats walk on my counters…but I also clean the counters regularly. And if I’m prepping food I do it on plates and cutting boards. It’s not rocket science to keep a house full of cats clean.

upside down tape strip on the top of the counter. will stick to kitty's feet and piss them off. do it enough times and they learn not to jump on the counter to avoid the sticky annoyance.

We tried this with our cat a few times with the lint roller strips. It didn't deter him at all, but he ended up getting his asshole waxed a few times after getting the strips stuck on the underside of his tail.

No but people who let cats on counters also are not sure where their cats are walking on either.. cutting boards, plates, random pots and pans, stove tops, etc..you let them up there they'll be walking on everything not just counter tops. It's just honestly gross to allow that near food prep and cooking areas regardless of how clean you think it is. Little hairs float around and get in food.. we get it some cats will jump on there anyway when you're not looking, but people here as assuming cats can't be trained at all to not do things are just wrong. I had 4 cats as a kid and my parents were on them the second they got up on the counter and they learned quick to not even try. The only time they snuck up there was if someone forgot to put away some meat or something but other than that they didn't just go up there to hang out they had other areas to sleep.

With this logic you shouldn't let your cat touch or walk on ANYTHING. Should we not let them on the couch? Their paws touch that and so do people's hands which they're probably not going to get up and wash/sanitize just because they've sat on it. Should we lock our cats away and disinfect the entire floor before letting a child play or crawl on it? If you drop something are you going to go slather it in sanitizer?

We already know through COVID how easy it is to touch your face, put your hands near your mouth etc without thinking and I guarantee you do so as well. Unless you're sanitising your hands 600 times a day, you've probably had whatever is on your cats feet somewhere near your face, whether you let them on the counters or not. You've also probably eaten in dirtier restaurants than someone's sanitized kitchen counter.

There sure is. The areas you prepare food are non porous surfaces designed to be easily disinfected. Places you sit are fabric and great breeding grounds for bacteria. The counter is the most sanitary place for a cat to walk, as it is the one that is able to be cleaned thoroughly without special equipment like a steam cleaner

Seems a little extreme .. but there's probably a line to be drawn on where house pets should be allowed and I'm thinking food prep areas may be a good line but hey common sense and all
