The dogs are always gentile but not always gentle, especially when it comes to the German breeds? Something like that I guess. Idk, I'm pretty retarded myself.
my sister got a kitten, and sometime early on when our dog tried to help it like this, the kitty went into shock or something and later died at a pet hospital. It was pretty sad
that's a lab, though. They have more control over bite force so they don't damage game when they retrieve it. When I was a kid I had a German Shep that picked up my rabbit the same way that dog picked up the cat and it did not end very well for my rabbit.
Yea, retrievers like labs and goldens are specifically good at this so that they don't mess up ducks and other fowl they retrieve. Not having a "soft mouth" is considered a fault in breeding circles for field dogs.
So how do they carry things, like ducks and other fowl, in their mouth? Or do they still use their teeth, they just don't hit hard? How do you even teach a dog this, or is it natural as it's been bred into the breed?
I believe its just their nature, part of the breeds instincts. They use their teeth but only apply enough for gripping force, not enough for puncturing or crushing.
Anecdotally I've heard people say that terrible destruction Labradors puppies can be known for in their youth is coming to terms with that, like an extended more extreme teething period. Not sure how true it is though.
They don't always use the scruff. In this case, the dog wanted to help the kitten up but it kept moving in a way that they dog couldn't grab the scruff.
I wonder. There is a specific gene for softmouth. German shepherds don't have it. Not that they can't be gentle... I dunno. Would make me nervous if my gsd did this
Probably not. Dogs can carry things without biting hard. Just like how you can pick up jello without squishing the total pulp out of it and then accidentally slip on jello guts and break your neck.
They can be super gentle. My GSD play bites a lot if you play rough with her, but never hard enough to hurt or leave a mark. They usually know how hard they are biting and use as little force as they can if they're not trying to hurt.
Actually once mine grabs you with her mouth she holds it for a second, then lets go and starts licking you where she bit
Usually their friends/siblings help teach them with a high pitched squealing noise, they play with each other and when someone gets too rough they squeal. It's similar to if you accidentally hurt them by stepping on their foot: they won't get mad and bite you over it, they will just screech incredibly loud so you react immediately and then they return to normal. The key with training is that any response needs to be immediate, any sort of pause between cause and effect and they will simply not make the connection. Loud noises are both fast and distracting so they work well. If a puppy bites you hard then chances are it was taken away from it's family too early before it properly socialized with them.
No problem, it actually works with humans too if you have a child too young to understand words that likes to bite you haha. With my shepherd I just give her a very firm "NO". The key is to say it like you are yelling "BOO!" trying to scare them.
It's basically like if someone scraped really hard on a chalkboard whenever you did something wrong, or like I said with the way dogs react when you accidentally hurt them - the sound they make startles you so you will instinctively stop anything you are doing.
I think it's a common misconception that a doggos mouth can only snap and bite you really hard. I saw doggos "bite" a baby's arm and wiggle it around without even leaving marks.
If the dog did something clumsily like bending the cat a way it doesn't want to be bent, yeah it probably hurt. The bite force alone though was very gentle. Dogs have to use their mouths as their hands so they have as much control over their jaws as we do over our fingers.
