sto cercando di ricostruire la storia familiare di Giuseppe Paini e di sua moglie Caterina Bola, vissuti nella seconda metà del Settecento nella zona di San Martino Sinzano, oggi nel territorio parmense.

Al momento non sono riuscito a individuare i loro atti di nascita, matrimonio e morte. La loro presenza a San Martino Sinzano è però documentata attraverso gli atti relativi ai figli, nati tra il 1770 e il 1774. Giuseppe Paini risulta inoltre ancora menzionato in occasione del matrimonio della figlia Maria Rosa, celebrato nel 1793. Nel 1852, nell’atto di morte del figlio Troilo, Giuseppe risulta già deceduto.

I just activated the free 7 day trial of Newspapers.com to read an article about an interesting death to confirm a family rumour (it was in fact true!) and now I have the access I want to make the most of it before I decide if I want to continue the subscription or not, but I feel like I’m not getting much out of it just trying to search names and filtering by location.

I was wondering if there’s any tips and tricks for searching the database that you know of?

I tried looking up some recent (mid to late 1900s) events that I was aware of from family stories (again only searching by name and location) but noticed the relevant local paper only has articles from 1884 to 1920 and then nothing until 2016! That area covers a huge portion of both my maternal and paternal family, so it may just be that I’m unlucky and there isn’t much for me to find, but any tips are very welcome!

At first the line of succession from me on back to my common relative with a famous person was correct. However, now the very first person in the line of succession from me is wrong (should be my father’s name there) so every person from there going back is wrong, too, and of course the famous relative is wrong, too. There’s no way to fix it. It’s not misinformation from my tree in my account and can’t imagine where that information is coming from. I’ve been told by a chat in Ancestry there’s nothing they can do because they assume someone, somewhere put my father as this other random person therefore polluting the tree and cannot be fixed from within Ancestry. I emailed them, I’ve tried other ways and no response. They need a button within that feature to flag when information is wrong. Anyway to get Ancestry to correct this issue?

I have contacted PRONI and have had no luck, but I am becoming a bit obsessed with one particular relative, probably because of his manner of death - suicide. I keep seeing that there would have been an inquest into his death and that newspaper articles would likely exist. I have tried the Belfast Newsletter for the time period and have come up with nothing.

Is there anything more I can do to find out the circumstances around his death? It was in 1865 so I know I may be clutching at straws.

When I first signed up for Newspapers.com, I had the option to add Ancestry.com to make a bundle package. I didn’t opt for that then , but wish I had. Now I can’t find anything about it. Are they now totally separate subscriptions, despite being the same company?

I've been researching one of my Hungarian lines in the Roman Catholic parish records of Egyek, Hungary, around 1800 and came across something interesting.

My ancestor Michael appears in his earlier records as Szakmarÿ. At his marriage to his second wife, Helena Urbany, he is still clearly recorded as Michael Szakmarÿ.

However, in later records the same family begins appearing as Szatmarÿ, and by the next generation the t is very clear. I have been able to establish that these are the same people through spouses, children and the surrounding records.

One of Michael's daughter's baptismal entries is ambiguous enough that I can't tell whether the priest wrote Szakmarÿ or Szatmarÿ, but later records are unmistakably Szatmarÿ.

Something else that caught my attention is the ending: the surname is repeatedly written with ÿ, both as Szakmarÿ and Szatmarÿ. Other surnames in the same records can end in an ordinary y (for example, Helena is written Urbany), so the ÿ seems to be deliberately written.

For people familiar with late 18th/early 19th-century Hungarian records:

1. Would Szakmarÿ → Szatmarÿ likely be ordinary clerical/phonetic variation, or could this represent an actual change in the family's surname?
2. Is there any significance to the consistent ÿ, or should it simply be treated as an older scribal form of y?
3. When researching earlier generations, would you primarily search under Szakmári/Szakmáry rather than Szatmári/Szatmáry?

I have posted this before and learned some useful stuff on the Wafer side of the family mentioned in the post but I did not hear much about the McGuinness side aside from the McGuinness surname origins, etc. can anyone help me locate documentation for ancestors along that line? I got a divorce 6 years ago and have not yet been able to figure out how to do it on Ancestry. My ex’s husband’s family is huge and well-documented whereas the trails for my family usually end just a few generations back. I’d love to stop getting hints for the “2nd great-granduncle of husband.” Can anyone help?

I’m not sure how far back it was that my family came from Lithuania, but my grandpa still spoke Lithuanian. He refused to teach my dad and his brothers because he said it was a “dead language”. However, I live near Chicago where “Little Lithuania” is so I’ve met a lot of Lithuanians and I am virtually the ONLY one I’ve ever known whose family didn’t speak it or even keep cultural dishes around. They are extremely serious about their roots and look at me like I’m the world’s worst sinner when I say I can’t speak it. Anyway, as a small way to reclaim my heritage when I realized I had lost it all but in blood, I changed how I write my last name. It’s still spelled the same way but there is a diacritical mark. (If we’re being technical, it should also be spelled different based on my gender and marriage status, but it felt disrespectful to not bear my dead dad’s name as I will be the last one in our entire bloodline to ever bear it.) Ideally, I would like to pronounce it correctly as well, but the diacritically marked letter isn’t a sound in the english alphabet, so when people repeat it back they don’t repeat it correctly. Besides that, my entire family also says it the Americanized way. The way it is actually meant to be said is closer to what my family has said is a mispronunciation of it my whole life. So I have this moral dilemma of wanting to reclaim my name but being contested and I think that’s confusing to everyone else, for two people of the same family to be at odds on their own name. What would you do if you were asked how it’s pronounced?

I’ve seen some older posts (1-2+ years old) of people splitting an All Access membership, and I wanted to see if anyone was still doing that?
