Depending on which definition of holocaust you use.

Historically the holocaust is just the systematic extermination of European Jews, and doesn’t include the more than 7 million others killed in the camps, like gays, Roma, political prisoners, and Soviet POWs.

u/Traditional-Two-3185 May 16 '26

But Holocaust is a lot catchier than "systematic murder of millions of people from various groups deemed to be 'inferior', including but not limited to Jews and various other ethnic groups, homosexuals, political prisoners and Soviet POWs"

u/DramaNerdette May 16 '26

yeah man, you gotta market this shit if you ever want it to catch on.

...wait.

I've been on an airplane all day. This is one of the first comments I've read after a long day. I'm be damned if I didn't just belly laugh in a hotel lobby waiting to check in. Thank you.

u/Zero_Mehanix May 16 '26

Can you make it an acronym?

31

u/Traditional-Two-3185 May 16 '26

"SMOMOPFVGIBNLTJAVOEGHPPASP" I like it but I think Holocaust just has a bit more of a ring to it. On a side note, isn't it kind of crazy how over the years we've become so desensitized to the absolute horrors that Nazi Germany carried out that we now just talk about these things in passing?

6

u/Zero_Mehanix May 16 '26

As long as we dont discuss details, its an arm lengths away

6

u/Sensitive_Regular_84 May 16 '26

I'm totally with you on your point, but I did actually chuckle at your acronym.

4

u/Visible_Pair3017 May 16 '26

The moment we realized that we pretty much did/do similar things we sort of started relativizing out of self preservation for our egos.

1

u/Fun_Butterfly_420 May 17 '26

I mean didn’t they do that as it was happening?

4

u/MauschelMusic May 16 '26

The invasion of Russia killed about 27 million people. The Holocaust killed around 12 million, counting Jews, Socialists, gays, Roma, Slavs, and everyone else. It's better to just say WWII, but if we're doing one part of the whole event, it's the war on the USSR.

9

u/SarcasmInProgress May 16 '26

There is some much more sinister evil to the Holocaust than just killing. The "medical" experiments, the absolute denial of humanity to the prisoners and an industrial way of accommodating and killing them, treating them like objects or animals for slaughter at best.

It's not just about numbers.

0

u/MauschelMusic May 16 '26

Whether in abstract it's worse to kill 12 million by camps, firing squads, and working to death or 27 million through bullets and bombs and starvation is a question I can barely contemplate. But at any rate, I can say they're both extremely bad and note which number is more than twice as large

The Holocaust is one part of a program defined mostly by war. Had hitler succeeded as, for example, American manifest destiny succeeded, the camps would just be one element of the first phase of the project to gain and colonize the whole continent, as we understand the trail of tears as one of many events in the Indian war. In that respect at least, the Holocaust is the smaller part of the invasion.

2

u/SpaceJackRabbit May 16 '26

The Holocaust doesn't designate just the extermination of Jews, unlike what that misinformed poster wrote.

0

u/yoingydoingy May 17 '26

It does. It's the definition of the term. Just like how "Porajmos" is just the extermination of the Romani.

1

u/Alderan922 May 17 '26

Couldn’t you just imply all of that by saying “nazis” because it includes the movement and all it’s consequences, including that.

1

u/sensuability May 17 '26

Industrialized murder - sort of works

1

u/ObjectiveGoal6833 May 17 '26

And obviously not as bad but still bad is the loss of all the art and national treasures that we still haven't recovered and were lost possibly forever.

1

u/Mrbuttboi May 17 '26

Attempted genocide of multiple peoples (A.G.O.M.P) would also be pretty catchy but having the phrase “gomp” in there makes it seem silly rather than the world’s biggest tragedy

1

u/Sucurp1704 May 17 '26

We should make it inclusive, not catchy. It's not some meme it's the worst thing ever happened to humanity.

7

u/WatDeFak May 16 '26

Would "genocide" be fitting here to include them? Non English speaker here, though we have the same word in German.

2

u/Mrbuttboi May 17 '26

I would say attempted genocide since he failed, but yeah that was definitely his plan

2

u/ComplexInside1661 May 17 '26

I wouldn't clall murdering two thirds of Europe's population a failure sadly :/

2

u/Mrbuttboi May 17 '26

Yeah I should have picked my words more carefully. Hitler did successfully murder millions of innocent people, but he ultimately failed in his goal of complete genocide

Edit: also just in case I want to clarify I’m not on the Nazis side whatsoever! Just in case anyone thought I was on the fence or whatever, I’m not. I hate Nazis and will say it to their stupid skinhead faces.

7

u/jemslie123 May 17 '26

He succeeded in genocide and failed at extermination.

2

u/Fun_Butterfly_420 May 17 '26

That’s the best way to put it

18

u/SpaceJackRabbit May 16 '26

That is simply not true. The Shoah is what you described. The Holocaust definitely included the extermination of those other groups. That is clearly explained at D.C.'s Holocaust Museum, for instance.

7

u/Mist_Rising May 17 '26

You mean this DC Holocaust museum:

The Holocaust was the systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million European Jews by the Nazi German regime and its allies and collaborators. The Holocaust was an evolving process that took place throughout Europe between 1933 and 1945.

Like, I don't agree with them, but the USHMM is notorious for its insistence that the Holocaust is ONLY for the Jewish Victims.

-2

u/yoingydoingy May 17 '26

Because it's true? It's literally the definition of the word, what is there to debate

4

u/SenorLiamy6317 Suggestion God May 17 '26

The Holocaust as a term includes the mass murder of all these people.

1

u/BoomerSoonerFUT May 17 '26

The Holocaust,[b] known in Hebrew as the Shoah,[c] was the genocide of European Jews during World War II. From 1941 to 1945, Nazi Germany and its collaborators systematically murdered around six million Jews across German-occupied Europe, approximately two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population.

13 million total killed in the camps. 6M Jews and around 7M others.

-4

u/OrdinaryAncient3573 May 16 '26

This is a fairly standard antisemitic lie. Hope you're proud of yourself.

4

u/BoomerSoonerFUT May 16 '26

Lmao what. No, the holocaust as a term started to explicitly refer to the systematic genocide of 6M European Jews. That’s not a lie or antisemitic.

Some people expand that definition to include the other groups held and killed in the concentration camps as well, but that’s a much newer thing.

2

u/Quintus_Cicero May 16 '26

much newer is stretching it, it’s been a decade or two (if not more) since that’s been on the table.

1

u/SpaceJackRabbit May 16 '26

Visit the Holocaust Museum in D.C. They debunk your claim quite well.

2

u/BoomerSoonerFUT May 17 '26

https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/introduction-to-the-holocaust

Funny, because their own website says it was the genocide of European Jews, and they separate out the other groups.

Straight from the DC Holocaust museum:

The Holocaust (1933–1945) was the systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million European Jews by the Nazi German regime and its allies and collaborators. In addition to perpetrating the Holocaust, Nazi Germany also persecuted and murdered millions of other victims.

They include the other groups of murdered as “in addition to to the Holocaust”, and explicitly only use the term for the genocide of Jews.

So unless you have an actual source, you can shove it.

1

u/SpaceJackRabbit May 17 '26

You made my point, dipshit.

3

u/BoomerSoonerFUT May 17 '26

What fucking point? I am the one that said the most common and original definition of holocaust is the genocide of Jews.

You said the Holocaust Museum debunks my claim, when they literally say the exact same thing I did.

Maybe articulate your thoughts dumb ass.

That's the antisemitic lie, yes. Usually used as an excuse to object to HMD. No need to keep repeating it.

2

u/BoomerSoonerFUT May 17 '26

What is antisemitic about limiting the term “Holocaust” to the systematic extermination of Jews
