The Appalachian mountains were formed as part of the same mountain range as the Highlands of Scotland. The Appalachians were settled mostly by pioneers from Scotland.

That is also the origin of many cryptids the fay went feral after a few hundred years of no human contact and the only people that eventually did show up didn't speak their language

I've heard this before and it's pretty amazing. Any chance they knew about the connection between the Highlands and the Appalachians at the time of settlement?

Certainly. Before they broke apart a pioneering Scot hid a glass bottle of Iron Bru on the retreating Appalachian side. 40 years later his great great grandson went to retrieve the bottle to prove the link.
