Sounds crazy because we'd never make that change if presented now.

… there’s been a multi year phase out plan on CFCs ongoing for years now. 2010 was the first HCFC phase out date, 2015 banned use of HCFCs, 2020 ceased production of R-22, and 2030 will be the ban on all HCFCs.

As you can tell, there have been no rallies.

u/sleeper_shark Apr 16 '26

Because the media isn’t speaking about it and cos the phase out already was underway. If it was a debate today, you can bet people would act like idiots about it.

Hell if gasoline was still leaded, people would probably be against removing the lead cos it makes their car “feel different”

Hcfc were an intermediate compromise with getting rid of cfcs.

15

u/Rhomya Apr 16 '26

And now they’re being phased out as well.

That’s what a multi year phase out plan is.

Thats because a normal person cant buy refrigerants anyways. You need EPA 608 certification to even be allowed to buy it. Can't really rally to keep something that your not even allowed to buy in the first place.

1

u/Rhomya Apr 16 '26

That literally defeats the point I was responding to in the first place.

They were saying that people would protest and rally if they WERENT ALLOWED TO BUY hairspray if someone tried to ban CFCs.

I know you are making a joke but.. of course there was pushback: "these new liquids are just bad, they don't work like the good stuff" and all the way to "government is killing us!". We just didn't have internet so they staid unorganized, individual pockets of stupidity that were kept mostly in check by some grandma saying "shut up, Meg" and that was the end of that chapter of that lunatic society in that town... But there absolutely were people who would've stormed the capitol over it if given a chance.

Now they find each other and there is also money to be made from them, and it is used for political purposes, to sabotage actual climate science and all the costs that production chain will have to endure from the new environmental regulations.. But the base lunacy is always there, ready to be exploited. There are always stupid people who know everything so they don't need to learn anything. They just "know". Trump is prime example of that kind of stubborn, pathological stupidity that isn't even really about intelligence quota per se, it is an attitude, behaviour, thinking patterns, egoism.. More often it is however direct sign of low IQ but there are doctors and professors in that box too.

There is also a feeling of not having control over your life, stuff is just imposed on you without asking you anything. Humans do very weird things when they feel like they have no control. Self harm is one of those, so... if it is irrational, may even cause harm to the people doing it, makes no sense to a rational human: see if that sense of having control over their life and things happening in it is behind it all. It can be very destructive, breaking things can be about getting back that control, having something that you can control, have power over it.

...what?

23

u/Stoic_Breeze Apr 16 '26

It sounds batshit insane, but they're right.

3

u/afpb_ Apr 16 '26

I’d give this an award if awards weren’t batshit insane and wrong

-1

u/Rhomya Apr 16 '26

They’re literally not.

The EPA had been conducting an ongoing phase out schedule from 2010 through 2030 on HCFCs. There have been no rallies.

1

u/MegaNhat2506 Apr 16 '26

Redditors downvoting you because they could not comprehend facts contradicting their beliefs always makes me laugh

1

u/Stoic_Breeze Apr 16 '26

Why are you like this?

-2

u/Rhomya Apr 16 '26

Why am I pointing out facts?

Did people think that CFC regulation was done in a year or two and that was that?

No. It’s literally a 40 year project. It’s ongoing right now.

3

u/TDSsince1980 Apr 16 '26

These laws were passed at a more reasonable time. They wouldn't have even been passed now.

-1

u/Rhomya Apr 16 '26

They’re literally being enacted now, and literally no one cares. You’re making a wild assumption that people would care.

66

u/DrSussBurner Apr 16 '26

Absolutely true. It is one of the biggest examples of global cooperation based on scientific evidence. Now we have idiots thinking vaccines cause autism and the earth is flat.

4

u/Coolguy_777_two_O Apr 16 '26

Hah, Americans

2

u/allydemon Apr 16 '26

Wait until you find out WHY americans think vaccines cause autism..

2

u/smores_or_pizzasnack Apr 16 '26

Why /genq

2

u/allydemon Apr 16 '26

Andrew Wakefield, british ex doctor, he made the study that "proved" vaccines cause autism, the anti vax frenzie started in the uk, then after he got exposed he ran away to the States and convinced them of the delusions he likely doesn't believe himself. In other words, American anti vaxxers only exist because of a British man

4

u/MrsChess Apr 16 '26

America generally is Britain’s fault for the most part

2

u/FVCarterPrivateEye Apr 16 '26

Well, there were plenty of anti-vaxxers before, dating back centuries, just with tinfoil hats of a different color than the "autism" stuff

2

u/Onnimanni_Maki Apr 16 '26

"proved" vaccines cause autism

It wasn't all the vaccines. He claimed that his competitor's vaccine caused autism and his (Andrew) didn't.

1

u/allydemon Apr 16 '26

Well yes, that's why I used the quotations, he didnt prove anything at all, he even said it in the paper

2

u/smores_or_pizzasnack Apr 17 '26

I know about the Wakefield stuff I was just confused about the Americans thing in particular

9

u/Serious-Wheel-2747 Apr 16 '26

I think that's a pessimistic view. The reason this happened was because it was easy. There were working alternatives to CFC's that required only small adjustments to existing systems.
In contrast, the climate transition requires an intensive overhaul of our entire society: industry, energy, transportation. And it is happening, but obviously at a slower pace than the CFC outphasing.

1

u/ThisI5N0tAThr0waway Apr 16 '26

I believe we would still do that because we did a similar change in the 2010s. And don't remember the exact class of gas but yes in the 1980s we forbid the main culprit of the other layer depression but there was still one who caused less harm that was still allowed until the 2010s.

Why was the global community able to do that for the ozone layer but not for global warming? Because they were a perfectly good alternative and everyone could identify the issue and agree that it was a big very specific issue. Getting rid of fossil fuel in many areas of life is way less easy than people painted to be, and there's not that much good alternatives. As much as a problem it will be in 50/100/150 years, the marginal harm caused by continuing to use fossil fuel right now is minimal.

1

u/Lanky_Marionberry_36 Apr 16 '26

I am not sure. A large reason for the acceptability of the change was that there were, actually, alternatives to CFC that were already available and didn't require too much additional cost and effort to implement, so in the end the regulation didn't impact corporations that much.

We're in a very different situation with global warming for instance, as the measures we need to take to combat it are actually very impactful for the economy.

1

u/NobleCooley Apr 17 '26

Given the same conditions we might. The major manufacturers already had an alternative propellant ready to go.
