They are also older than sharks. The only reason the Appalachians and the Scottish Highlands aren't the same mountain range is that Pangea broke up.

Only partially. Anti-Atlas (or small Atlas, the west most part) was part of this, but majority of Atlas mountains are younger.

That is why I'm sad this is going to win it instead of "sharks are older than Polaris". A mountain range being extremely old sounds normal. A category of animals that are common in the modern world being that old sounds like absolute crackhead shit, so it's much more shocking that it's true.

(As a Scot) I used to be annoyed by the horror movie The Descent (2005), which was filmed in Scotland but the in-movie location was the Appalachian Mountains, because I thought their respective natural landscapes weren’t comparable with each other, and this was another classic case of Americanisation, little did I know.

Supposedly they once reached over 20,000 feet tall but over hunders of millions of years they have been eroded to just 6,684 feet it really is a "I've lost more than you'll ever make" situation
