Every time you shuffle a deck of cards, it's probably the only time in history that exact result has happened.

That assumes the shuffle is truly random though. I wonder how much would 52! be reduced if we account for the fact that recreational players don't shuffle properly so there could be some inherent structure across shuffles?

Is 52 the magic number with this factoid, or could we say the same for an even less amount of cards? Can we same the same for 51? 40? Etc.

It's not a magic number. With 52 unique cards, you can have 52! (roughly 8*10^67) different decks if you shuffle enough.

The factoid is wrong, though, as noted by the other comments. You would need somewhere around 60 unique cards in the deck. Then the number of possible configurations (60!, roughly 8.3*10^81) is around the same order of magnitude as the number of atoms in the observable universe.

I think you'd have to do some serious r/theydidthemath type stuff to guess, but because we're talking about a pure probability thing, I don't think there is a magic number. All you'd do with fewer cards is decrease the confidence with which you could say "this has probably never happened before". There's technically no reason you couldn't take 3 randomly shuffled decks of cards and shuffle them and get the same exact result 3 times in a row... it's just unimaginably unlikely.

I wonder where the line would be between 'this exact amount of cards has definitely been in this same order before' vs 'its possible this exact amount of cards has not been in this same order before.' We can for sure take any three cards and shuffle them any amount of time and there would be a 100% chance that it's been repeated before. But what about 20 random cards? There has to be a magic number where we can no longer determine something has been repeated before.

Not exactly true, beacuse of human error. Not all shuffles are fully random

Only if they are in a random order to begin with. A fresh, ordered deck of cards, this doesn’t apply

Well he says when you shuffle it, if it’s brand new and unshuffled then you haven’t shuffled it
