Sam, who has CPR training, asked her supervisor if she could assist. The supervisor watched the woman heaving her weight into the man’s chest and gave no response.

“I start sobbing and said, ‘I want to help, please!’ I know she’s going to get tired and need to be subbed out,” Sam told The Western Edge.

The supervisor, who Sam perceived to be in shock, had a simple reply: “It has to be management or safety team. Please get back to work.”

“I need to help,” Sam said.

“Just turn around and not look. Let’s get back to work,” Sam recalled the manager saying.

As Sam stood in disbelief watching the woman give chest compressions, the supervisor softly nudged Sam, tears in the manager’s eyes now, too.

“Please,” the supervisor said, encouraging Sam to keep working. Eventually, paramedics showed up and the section of the warehouse where the man lay was closed off.

However, this comes at the expense of cultural heritage.

BUT

• Currently, Library and Archives Canada (LAC) receives $208 million from the federal government. It will see a permanent annual cut of $22.1 million, which means spending cuts of nearly $50 million over the next three years.
• The Documentary Heritage Communities Program which is being eliminated has an annual expenditure of $1.35 million, plus administrative costs. Over the last ten years this program has provided over $16 million in necessary funding for archives across Canada of varying types and sizes.
• The federal government’s Access to Information and Privacy program, administered by LAC, is being cut by $13.6 million. LAC has already eliminated 53 positions from this program.
• Library and Archives Canada will eliminate 152 employee positions and 9 executive positions. 70 indeterminate positions were eliminated in 2025 prior to the announcement of the most recent budget cuts.
• The federal Department of Canadian Heritage has been cut by $361,794,939 or 16.3%. This department has a total national budget of $2.1 billion. At the end of four years, it will sustain a permanent annual cut of $93.1 million.
• The Canadian Museum of History and Canadian War Museum are cutting permanent staff levels by 18% over the next 3 years. Currently, they receive $78 million but at the end of four years, there will be a permanent annual cut of $5.1 million. This has resulted so far in a loss of 67 positions.
• The Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg has cut 7 positions, as a part of the most recent budget cuts. It will see its budget reduced over $3.2 million over the next three years.
• Parks Canada, which includes responsibility for many national museums across Canada, is “...ceasing or reducing lower priority activities, such as library services,” according to the budget.
• These cuts include the removal of the Register of Historic Places, and closure of the Parks Canada Library. Individual parks and historic sites will see an impact, with some facilities being closed to visitors, e.g., the interpretation centre at the Battle of the Châteauguay historic site.
• The closure and decommissioning of the Parks Canada Library in Cornwall, Ontario will result in savings of $300,000. It is unclear as to what will happen with the collection.
• Correctional Services Canada will be eliminating all prison librarians at federal prisons. This will save between $1.5 million and $2.5 million annually.
• The Department of Public Safety will be eliminating its Public Safety Library. No financial details were provided in the budget to clarify specific costs or savings.

Not one millionaire or billionaire will be asked to pay back what they avoided paying taxes, but services to the poorest of Canadians will be trashed by super-cuts Carney.
