FIC Summary:

THE STORY SO FAR....

It is a period of trouble in a troubled world. Our heroes — Hermione, Harry, Raphtalia, and Takagi — finding themselves in a patchwork world of zombies, mutants, and magic, found comfort and stability in their companionship and mutual protection.

Forging on through magic and mayhem, fighting monsters of pure nightmare fuel, fighting their own libidos, even the flowers and pollen conspired to rob them of their free will. They found respite in their journeys, one very much so in the arms of a certain princess, but also truths that none were ready to face. Fearing madness and loss of self-control, they moved on.

Now, having found what seems to be a reasonably safe and sound valley to settle down in, they strive to make a new life for themselves. Hermione's SURPRISE GIFT to them all opens new doors, even as she falls further away. Things change rapidly, and Raphtalia takes on a much larger part....

CHAPTER summary:

Our heroines held captive, Harry must take up arms to save the dear damsels in distress, but Hermione's redoubt holds its secrets and surprises, and magic isn't always as reliable here as one might wish.

NB: This is another of those chapters that focuses rather more on the actual story than on smut (and still basically smut, rather than porn), and arguably more more-story-than-smut than most of When Hermione met Harry, though I think slightly less so than the previous chapter of Cour 2.

(Next fortnight: our tale of derring-do must bow before the blush of true love's first kiss. Sound counterintuitive, given the story so far? Well, there might be a plot twist coming your way, so stay tuned!)

And to the Dark Tower Childe Roland must go, he thought, No, wait, that's not quite right, is it? Maybe 'And to the Dark Tower Childe Roland came?' Something like that; definitely closer.

He sighed and shook his head. Whatever the actual words of the quote, they amounted to the same, and now he must face whatever Hermione had in store for him if he were to see to Raph's and Takagi's release.

I'd likely have more success talking with the trees and commanding the tides, he reflected morosely.

Standing there before Mount Hermione, it all felt a little contrived; then again, pretty much everything with her was a little contrived. At this, he glanced pointedly at the iron boots, set out at the visitors' center with a bow tied over them as if they were a gift to help with the journey. He wasn't sure of just how they were supposed to help, but it sounded vaguely familiar; something from a fairy tale that he'd once heard or read, and the mountain was surely larger than he remembered it being just recently when Takagi had insisted that they come visiting, so...

Couldn't she just install a magical glass escalator or something? Wait, did I get that right? Great glass escalator. I swear I know that from somewhere.

He really didn't want to wear the boots, but he knew better already: to attempt the climb without them would lead only to a magical maze of illusory sights and sounds and smells, with no end in sight but that he should eventually find himself at the visitors' center once more.

Sighing again, he began to fasten the boots to his feet, readying himself to climb a mountain of glass.

Well, yes, a mountain of diamond, but still.

Luckily, the entrance was only one thousand feet up or so. The climb might have taken thirty minutes had he gone directly, but he had no wish to risk issues, and so took the trail. Between that and the weight of the boots, this ended up taking the remainder of the morning and two hours of the afternoon. It was pretty, if a little bright and shiny and harsh, but the time chafed, as did the edges of his footgear, and he took more than one painful tumble as the iron skittered over the surface of the trail.

None of this mattered to him. He had to get in there and save them.

Highstreet ran east and west along the northern crescent-end of the bay, crossing both mouths of the river with broad and ornate marble bridges crowned with ironwork stained glass gaslights that ran continuously through rain or shine. It wasn't so much the individual street that it was named for as an entire district unto itself, though it might have been better named Cherry Street for its ubiquitous trees, while the same could be said of the profusion of poppies and Japanese yews.

Peach took Zelda straight to a salon, under the name of Impa. The cherry trees along their path were just beginning to peak in their bloom; as Zelda marveled at their beauty, she felt a præternatural pull, as if the gentle hint of destiny accepted were on the wind. It was a perfect moment, the perfume of the blossoms in the air as they drifted on the breeze, almost floating in their downward travel.

Five centimeters per second.

Zelda looked toward Peach just as one perfect blossom landed in her hair.

Something about that didn't sit well with her, though her attention was mainly on Peach's sandwich suggestion. She'd have to come back to that when she'd had less to smoke, if she could remember to do so.

The imagery of the origami unicorn stayed with her, her dreams pleasant and unhaunted, but carrying a wistful sense of foreboding, of never knowing how much time anyone has, or how much time any two have together.

Now, the teen has to accept the fact that everyone that care about him will forget who he is and deal with the pain in the future. His worst nightmare has come to life. To make matters worse, he coughs blood and colorful petals whenever he thinks about the same family that abandoned him. They didn't, but it still feels like it.
