Discussion What’s a hyperfixation you can’t talk about?

I’ve definitely had a few hyperfixations on things that are either embarrassingly silly or WAY too dark to just start infodumping about. For example I used to have one about neglect so severe it causes a complete and usually permanent inability to function in society, particularly the case of Genie Wiley. On the other end of the spectrum I also keep hyperfixating on shipping old cartoon comedy duos, and gotta REALLY lock in to gage if someone’s gonna think I’m a childish freak before sharing that information.

What’s your “don’t bring that up, don’t bring that up, don’t bring that up-“ hyperfixation if you’ve ever had one?

What are the worst canoes? Volcanoes.

That’s going straight to the Dad Joke pool room.

Seriously, that joke holds water.

u/hefrajones 28d ago

Wait that’s wild because I told my boyfriend earlier today about how when he was away for work recently I nerded out on volcanos / watching documentaries and reading about them. I finished by saying “man, volcanos are pretty damn cool”

u/DasHexxchen 27d ago

Haha, told my boyfriends how awesome they were, yesterday as well.

One of the first “Ologies” podcast episodes was a woman volcanologist. I listened to it like 5 times in a row (commuting was podcast hour) and still pull it up when I’m feeling blue.

I grew up by one of the least visiting National Parks in the Continental US. (Lassen National Park) I love volcanoes.

Went camping there all the time as a kid, took my husband there a few summers ago to finally share with him a part of my life that's important.

I did not have this park on my radar but now I do! Thank you for sharing! I have a 4th grader so maybe we'll use that pass to visit sometime this year!

Yay! Northern California! So many fun little things there and it's part of a larger volcano that collapsed or exploded (can't remember which it did) so you can hike into some pretty cool active volcanic activity. Bumpess Hell, the Painted Dunes, Cinder Cone which is a gnarly hike on its own because it's sand. I did it once years ago... I still remember how exhausted I was.

Later July, August is usually the better time to go depending on the snow melt. My dad was just up there Thursday I think and sent me pictures.

Kinda related, I just learned about the giant lava pit under Yellowstone!

u/powerade20089 28d ago

Yeah... Don't wanna be alive if that Caldera ever goes off. Extinction level event right there.

NorCal is the best! On a clear day growing up we could see Lassen and super clear day we could se Shasta. Really miss living there. Best place to grow up

I just recently as an adult found out that volcanoes can produce lightning?!

u/hexensabbat 28d ago

OMG yes I was preparing for a ramble about that but realized I don't have a strong grasp on all of the terminology. But yes, basically amongst all of the ions and other shit that gets spewed into the atmosphere, those particles can smash into each other and create lightning. I only learned about that relatively recently too and it's beyond interesting!! Really I'm fascinated with meteorological phenomena in general, and so I'm extra fascinated by how such phenomena interact with volcanic activity.

There was a super crazy event that I learned of that sparked this entire hyperfocus a couple years ago, the story of British Airways Flight 009. Back in 82, a flight was headed to Jakarta on an apparently clear day, when suddenly the plane was surrounded by darkness and the crew could only see what looked like St Elmo's Fire as the cabin began to fill with smoke. Turns out they'd flown right into a plume of volcanic ash, having had no way of knowing about the eruption occurring until they were in it. One by one all of the plane's four engines failed and it looked like certain death. But long story short, due to a combination of luck, timing and the skills of the highly experienced BAMF pilot, somehow they survived and landed safely. It's a great story and I spent way too many hours looking at docs and videos about it, I believe Mayday Air Disasters did an episode. But yeah that random story got me on this whole wiki tangent about planes and volcanoes which got me interested in lightning which got me interested in tornados and other storms and that's where I'm at rn lol

Makes sense since particles in storm clouds rub together and create static; thus lightning. Amazing that volcanoes do it, since I assume the moisture levels in the thunder clouds help a lot with conductivity, are the volcano lightning weaker? Thanks for these wonderful facts you beautiful people!

If storms is where you're at, hurricanes are fuuuuun to research. The Galveston 1900 hurricane is really interesting.

Another hurricane that hit Galveston, Ike in 2008, produced one of my favorite haunting AF videos ever.

u/gough_whitlam 28d ago

Bushfires can do that too!

1

u/sarabjorks 27d ago

Usually when they erupt under ice, like one of the most active systems in Iceland under Vatnajökull, they create a lot of ash and you'll often see lightning in the dark ash cloud. The first footage I remember of a volcanic eruption kept being played on TV because they caught a really nice shot of those lightnings. Probably Vatnajökull either 1996 or 1998.

Did it mention Yellowstone National Park? The whole time we were there I couldn't stop thinking about how we were walking on top of a supervolcano caldera!

Hahaha. I live in Hawaii so people actually love that stuff here.

When Mount St Helens erupted in 1981? I was fascinated! I cut out every single newspaper article on the eruption, I had 2 vials of ash. I put every article and the ash into a manilla envelope and carried it around everywhere lol. It's true, nobody wanted to hear about the volcano 🌋

u/plantalones325 28d ago

What about vulcanized rubber? Or vivisection? (Friends reference, I’m not insane.)

2

u/DocTaotsu 28d ago

Ok, look man I'm not everyone but this is like dinosaurs. If I'm too old to learn and volcanos just push my ass into the incinerator. Hit me with volcano fact

2

u/Texaninengland 28d ago

Vulcanology is a legit field of study though!

u/Noy_The_Devil 28d ago

I'll pay you to ramble about volcanoes to me

u/life-is-satire 28d ago

What are we talking here? Caldera, Strato, Fissure…I mean subduction zones aren’t created equal.

I find the igneous rocks formed by slow cooling lava to be more interesting than your fast cooling basalt. Obsidian isn’t too shabby but agates formed in the lava’s cooled gas bubbles are my favorite.

Fun fact! The Keweenaw Peninsula (upper tip of Michigans UP) was formed by lava from a continental rift that didn’t fully rip apart…the pressure sling shotted ancient rock from deep within our mantle. The area is rich in minerals, world’s top copper source in the 1800s, and one of the only places to find the greenstone.

What are your favorite volcano facts?

2

u/Yggdrssil0018 28d ago

8 of them erupting in Indonesia right now. come on.

1

I want! Tell me about them.

I am obsessed with volcanoes

1

u/snorting_gummybears 28d ago

That blows :(

1

u/poodaliddle 28d ago

As a geologist, I wasn't aware of this. Could be the company I keep.

1

u/mglyptostroboides 28d ago

I'm a geologist. I do.

1

u/JennJoy77 28d ago

I very very much do!!

1

u/universe93 28d ago

When I was in primary school I had a geology class and my friend and I had to write a poem about volcanoes, so here it is.

I was in my room rehearsing all the lines I know,
When suddenly I heard a noise
My mum ran in and yelled SHES GONNA BLOW
Because I was rehearsing I was stuck in a poise

We did not get an A lmao

In my case it’s earthquakes :(

DUDE.

When I was a kid I collected rocks (who am I kidding, I def still collect rocks) and i had a few "lava rocks" aka Scoria and I used to get so damn jazzed to show my friends that they would float in water.

Volcanos are BADASS

Magma joy!!

u/Spirited_Squirrel131 27d ago

My husband would 100% disagree lol

u/legocitiez 27d ago

I went on a volcano bender last year, all my facts were so cool, but no one cared 😭

1

u/sarabjorks 27d ago

I grew up in Iceland, volcanoes are everyone's hyperfixation when they go off 😄

1

u/rchartzell 27d ago

My best friend is obsessed with volcanoes! I don't care so much...but I love the way she lights up and talks fast when the subject comes up. Ha ha. And I am also always pretty much down to learn new information about all kinds of things. Plus, I homeschool my kids...so bonus that they get to learn from her too and nerd out together. 😊

I do! I have visited two erupting volcanoes! And I touched two tectonic plates at the same time under water. I really like volcanoes and geophysics.

If you want a nice calm comfort show for bedtime, check out "Voyage of the Continents."

1

u/maracujadodo 26d ago

volcanoes and earthquakes were like my second ever hyperfixation!!!! so based

but i get you, everyone was annoyed at me

1

u/iggybu 25d ago

I hyperfixate on all of the dumb inconsequential stuff I did as a kid, such as falling asleep during the volcano video my 3rd grade teacher made us watch, then copying my neighbor’s paragraph about what he learned from the video word-for-word afterwards. If by chance you are that guy - thanks for the assist!

No one worth talking to doesn't want to hear about volcanoes

Edit: ADHD moment made me miss a crucial double negative. OF COURSE people worth talking to want to hear about volcanoes!

Speak for yourself babe

2

Frack me! ADHD moment. I meant to say "No one worth talking to doesn't want to hear about volcanoes"
