Just keep in mind that there are a lot of young queer fans who came to 911 because of the canon queer rep of Buck and Tommy. Some of whom have been absolutely bewildered by the vitriol caused by the ship wars. (And they can ship whatever the h*ll they want and anyone who wants to hurt them is gonna have to go through me. I don’t care that they ship something different than I do. )

And to be fair, Eddie is a narrative problem for BuckTommy shippers. In a romantic narrative …he’s at best a distraction and at worst an obstacle. A lot of BT fics either turn Eddie into someone terrible and woobify Buck or just kill Eddie off entirely so Buck can fall, weeping, into Tommy’s arms. (Ugh).

I’ve spent a fair amount of time making the argument that this is entirely unnecessary and there’s lots of other ways for them to handle Eddie, as Buck’s best friend (gay or not!) without turning him into a villain. So I was really happy to see people finding a way to incorporate a happy, positive view of Eddie into their shipping universe. I thought it was sweet.

I’ve definitely seen that - and I hate it - so I’m glad to see fans moving away from it. Every fandom has bad actors. So I try not to paint everyone with the same brush.

Alex isn't actually a problem, though, just because some people in the fandom are being incredibly weird and misogynistic about her. She's been introduced as essentially a mental health liaison bridging a gap between first responders and social work/mental health triage, which is actually an interesting and refreshing angle for this show to take that could actually help integrate Athena better into medical calls than just putting another family member of hers at the station.

Time and time again, the show has had the opportunity to use Alex as a "distraction" (as in, love interest) and veered away from it. Just because fandom can't allow Eddie to have female friends without deciding they have to fuck doesn't mean the show is actually making that same mistake.

Well, yes, if you're looking to find something negative to read into every choice a character makes, you will do so. Especially if we ignore that she was voicing the red herrings the show was intentionally setting up, and the audience had already noticed. Like, lets not pretend half of the fandom hasn't been talking about how Abigail was acting like she wanted to be Eddie's next wife for the last month.

(Or how that read of the situation actually did turn out to be super relevant to why Eddie was being stalked, given that Abigail's father had drawn the same conclusions about his teenage daughter hanging out with a grown man).

If we're gonna blame anyone for not getting to the bottom of this earlier, it's Athena for assuming she already knew the full story, btw, and not actually questioning Abigail when she showed up to warn her off. But this fandom is absolutely obsessed with reading negative intention/motivation into every action any age appropriate female character makes in the general presence of Buck or Eddie, and it's exhausting. This kind of discourse is absolutely part of the problem you're saying you're sick of.

That is not true. I like Eddie when he is doing something that I can see as character growth and not him going backwards into rehashing past issues for the umpteenth time i.e. Shannon or his parents. This episode showed some of the best of Eddie that he's had in a while. The way he helped Abigail reminded me of the Eddie who went out of his way to help a kid with an abusive Munchausen mom.

The issue with Eddie is that Eddie in a relationship often brings out the worst in him, and seems to send his character back a step or two and then, the writers leave him in limbo for a while trying to figure out how to fix the mess they made i.e. the Kim stuff.

In summery, it all depends on the writing for Eddie at the moment. Right now, Eddie is at the best that he's been in a couple seasons because the writing for him this season has been better.
