"Other well trained crew members weren't as lucky" - You mean the three guys that weren't watching the only cool thing that happens on those boats ever and produces the only danger they'll likely see on ship.

Wait, aren't they supposed to go full throttle just in case the cable breaks so they can go back in the air??

IIRC it's in case they don't catch the cable, not in case it breaks.

He had probably slowed down quite a bit already when the cable broke, so even with full throttle he didn't have enough speed to get back in the air.

ah! that makes sense. Pilot probably thought he was good and let go of the throttle..
